Speedlock SERIOUSLY needs to be toned down!
I know it's by design that the game "punishes" players who move too fast (60km/h seems to possibly the trigger) by denying them foundable fragments or kicking them from adversary chains, but in the last week or so something seems to have changed and speedlock is being triggered more frequently in cases where the player is not moving at highway speeds. It's my suspicion that some recent change in speedlock is the true cause behind so many of the recent "booted from adversary chain" bug reports. It is also causing a frequent number of "too far away" error messages when interacting with POI (even if within a few meters) while standing still.
These are my observations of events that seem to be happening at significantly increased frequency, the result is being booted from adversary chains or for the foundable rewards screen to be skipped.
- drift from sitting still inside a building with low GPS signal
- connecting/disconnecting from a nearby wifi AP, especially one that causes the phone's calculated position to shift
- traveling in a straight line at a low rate of speed in one direction (about 15-30 km/h) for a while, then changing direction and traveling a short distance (about 50-100 meters seems to do it) then stopping.... I've had this happen to me numerous times while driving with the app open (NOT interacting!), and safely pulling over into a parking lot to play.
- tapping on a foundable while traveling at a moderate speed (between 20-60 km/h) but coming to a complete stop for at least a few seconds before interacting or casting. In one test the rewards screen was skipped even after waiting 90 seconds after stopping motion to cast.
If all this is "working as designed", then I would like to ask that the speedlock mechanism be changed so as not to punish the player so harshly when invoked. Any of the above triggers cause the player to waste spell energy and potion charges, even when they are not in a moving vehicle. In Ingress for example, speedlock simply causes actions to fail but does not consume the inventory item. I'd suggest that if the game thinks the player is moving too quickly, disable the spell casting UI temporarily or return a "spellcast failed" toast message instead of kicking the player back to the map.

Simple solution, do not try and return things if your wizard on map is on a broom, then the game thinks youre going too fast.
This punishes players who are “passengers” in a moving vehicle.
I completely agree that speed lock needs to be disengaged completely so “passengers” can enjoy the game, especially on longer road trips.
@grsmhiker @WitchHiker, the game has no way of knowing whether the player is a passenger or the driver. Speed check seems like a reasonable precaution to dissuade people from playing while driving.
And yes, looking at the game while driving is distracting, even if you park to interact with traces.
i think sudden acceleration also triggering the kicking out of battle. happened once or twice to me.
Today, I clicked on a Dark Mark trace, and was able to finish a dragon adversary chain while being a passenger of a moving car driving down surface streets. I have completed a couple of Adversary chains as a passenger on a couple of occasions before that, and once was on a freeway. I also got booted out of an Adversary chain when we got home, and I was close enough to the house for the home WiFi to interact with my phone and interrupt the game.
Since my friends are not considered slow drivers, I believe it is interruptions in the network signal. Once, we passed by a place with no network signal at all. The HPWU game was totally black until we passed by that area.
I play the game a lot as a passenger, and noticed that sometimes it will not let me pick up a spell energy or ingredient on the map while on the regular streets and the freeway. It is the same with traces. I just assumed that the network signal was weak.
I am a passenger every time I am in a car and also walk slot in the same small areas I find it quite annoying that the speed warning comes up when I am standing in the one place as the game seems to be unsure as to my location even when if it were to have happened I would be moving at the speed of sound or more.
Too many times in sitting still on couch and speed lock thinks I’m driving. Really??
@WitchHiker on the upside, it’s possible to satisfy the daily walking requirement while sitting on the couch. 😂
