It is rude and totally disrespectful toward the players to force the update within just about 3 hours after the release! People who were planning on playing during their commute or while running errands cannot do that because they cannot afford downloading update using the cell data.
It is even more hurtful that the entire set of the assets need to be re-downloaded (5+ GB). That exceeds our monthly cell plan allowance (consider that we have 3 players in the family).
The new release has an awful bug: it fails to do proper asset management, - it forgets to delete the old assets. As a result, - either you end up with over 11 GB of storage used by HPWU, or, if your phone doesn't have that much space, - cannot download the new assets (also a waste of cell data. -- So, people are forced to uninstall and reinstall the app.
Reinstalling the app means loss of cached maps. When people play in different cities (we play in at least 4 different cities), the loss of the cached map data (especially multiplied by 3 players in the family) is also considerable waste of cell data. (Not to mention the various annoyances of configuring the re-installed app, and seeing all those "red dots" for the potions and tasks that had been done long before.)
Bug: without downloading the assets, the oddities do not work. The health bar is not loaded/shown, you cannot do the spells, nothing happens. In some cases, if you happen to walk away while it is trying to download the huge asset on the cell data, the app is getting stuck completely, and needs to be restarted.
Yet another bug: "Download essential assets" does not estimate the available space correctly. Downloading just the "essential" assets resulted in the app filling up all available space, but getting stuck in the middle of the download with the "you don't have enough space..." error. So, the app is not working now, and it did not free up the space from the failed download. So, the entire phone is crippled, and the game is unplayable. The only option is to uninstall the app on that phone. We are debating if we should re-install it.
After 3 months of waiting, we could have waited a few more days for WBG to test things and to let people download the update in the comfort of their Wi-Fi. Besides, there is a reason why platforms like Google Play have staged roll-out, - to check what bugs might be in the new release, and to fix them without inflicting the pain on all customers at once.
What's good in rolling it out if we cannot play - for the reasons described?! It looks like we might just skip the upcoming spotlight event for which you rushed so thoughtlessly because I do not feel like reinstalling the app on three phones.
This might happen to be just that proverbial "last straw".

Niantic has really first class developers and an outstanding test team!!!
But the good think is: The Apps stops working before the Apple In-App-API takes my money. So they only moved the bug to an earlier place in the In-App-Purchase!
Btw.: I already have seen two times the message „game not working on your device“ and the App crashed - really on an iPhone XS the App did not work anymore?!?!?!?
And my 12.000 gold I have already paid for are still missing ....
Like for some people, the update didn't change the black screen.... So I would love to play with my husband, but I can't because the app doesn't work on my phone... We are thinking of getting rid of it !
Literally can’t play the game. Deleted and reloaded the app. Still doesn’t work. My phone is older, I guess it’s time to stop playing and delete. I was a daily player. Nothing loads. I try to engage a foundable and it just spins. Anything I open, or try to engage, just spinning clocks. Horrible update.
@Stirlingpiper did you download all assets? After I updated my game was very slow with lots of spinning clocks. I think it was just trying to download assets on the fly, because after a while it started working better. And once I downloaded the new assets it was back to working like normal.

I’d unlocked the node precisely to clear the block as I hardly ever see a partner inn (I think there’s one in a town some miles away from memory but I’m seldom there and generally not able to play when I am).
@BOLLARICE if you have anything above 5-ish gigs with all assets downloaded, it is a bug. Uninstall and reinstall and redownload all assets and you'll have 5.ish gigs. At least that worked for me.

I don't know if its just me but the game is lagging after the update. I have a Samsung A50 and the screen takes extra time to load or my screen goes black when I click on a trace and the little loading sign appears at the bottom left of the screen. Opening the registry is slow, the page after you sent back a trace is slow to load. There's an overall lag
@Scarlet16 if you havent already, download all assets, im assuming you are in iOS? its a new 'known' (known as of now by community, not sure its been acknowledged yet by the dev team), in iOS after 2.17.0 , if you have all assets downloaded, then idk.
I updated the app and downloaded the assets. I turned Adventure sync off and on. I walked 2,000 steps in my house according to my fitbit and google fit. Adventure sync says I walked 0 steps. So is the only thing on Adventure sync that was fixed is that you don't need the app open to get credit for steps if you walk linear distance outside? That laps in your home do not count for distance? If this is the case then Adventure sync is useless until I get my COVID vaccine and it is safe to go outside again.

So, some of the minor bug fixes actually worked, but the major issues are still broken and now we have the following new bugs:
Redundant data issue causing game to consume 11 GB of data, instead of about 5.5 GB (remedied by reinstalling/clearing data and downloading assets [very problematic solution to those with limited data plans and no access to low cost/free data connections])
Login loop, when trying to connect with Facebook (uninstalling and reinstalling your Facebook app may fix the issue)
Trace pattern not showing in encounters (same fix as redundant data issue)
In conclusion; the major bugs were not fixed and we now have new major bugs to contend with. There is also, no way around having to deal with the new issues, due to being forced to update the game 3 hours after the release of the 2.17 update.

Seriously thinking of uninstalling. Each new update, with new crude to fix all the bugs, has been making it worse. Used to love this game, but now its just sad.

the Adventure Sync Bug was NOT fixed (Huawei P20 Lite, Android 9.1)

Having the same issues as others now that I've downloaded....click on a confoundable and now there is no trace, so can't fight anything.

The update was a little laggy until I downloaded assets. Now the game works fine, and the few visual updates are beautiful
But I'm really really disappointed adventure sync still doesn't work. I got my hopes too high that this update would actually fix it
