How are locations chosen for INN’s and Green houses and can new locations be requested? How dose the game get pics of the markers?

    First came Ingress, then came POGO and now we have WU. In Ingress you can snap a photo of a location, type up info about it and submit it to become a Portal. In POGO they're pokestops and gyms and in WU they're obviously Fortresses, Inns and Greenhouses. Not all of the portals, commonly referred to as poi, have crossed over from Ingress to POGO and WU but as time goes on more and more will.

    I'd like to explain the situation that your question touched on a bit:

    • Points of Interest ("Inn, Fortress, Greenhouse" in HP:WU, "Arena, Pokestop" in Pokemon GO, "Portal" in Ingress) in the 3 games share a common database.
    • These PoI are then migrated into the 3 games according to certain rules. Specificly the "S2 Cells" are a ground-rule to make sure that an area isn't "so densely populated that you can't click on anything without accidently clicking on something else"
    • PoI have initially been created from a Platform called "Panoramio" and later additional Places have been submitted by Players of Ingress. Originally, those Submissions were Reviewed by Niantic but that system has recently been changed into a Review-System that the Players themselves take part in.
    • New PoI can be Submitted by Ingress-Players of Level 10 or higher or PokemonGo-Trainers of Level 40.
    • New Submissions can be reviewed by Ingress-Players of Level 12 after they have passed a Test to understand the ruleset that Niantic has set up.
    • Points of Interest have to adhere certain rules: They have to be safely accessible by Pedestrians; they have to be of educational, cultural, recreational or historic value (preferably more than one); they mustn't be adult-only places (like Pubs, etc); they mustn't be K12-Schools; they mustn't be on single-family private residential property

    There are already lots of people out there, who can submit new Points of Interest, and there are already lots of Points of Interest all over the world. If you have further Questions about this process or if you would like any further help in populating your area with more PoI, don't hesitate to reach out.

    @Lucoire one small correction. The original Ingress portals came from the Historical Marker Database and other geolocated databases as originally seen in Niantic's first app Field Trip.

    (Field Trip user and Ingress Beta)

    @Osprey1 You're right, in that the PLACES came from the Historic Marker Database... yet the PICTURES for many of them were taken from Panoramio (which has since been taken offline - a move that has left many POI without an image)

    I remember the beta :) The intial dataset had the panoramio photos of historical landmarks, and fire stations and post offices with no photo (they used some municipal database for those.) I used to scroll through my keys and if I saw static instead of a photo, I knew it was probably a post office.

    One more thing I can add is that Flags/Landmarks are pulled from the Open Street Map project. Areas on that can be labeled by land use, so, for example, a bank will often show a Dark Arts flag (which always makes me snicker) or a government building will have a Ministry of Magic family flag.

    I disagree with the Panaramio statement. This picture

    https://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?Marker=401 was used for one of my local portals (there were very few) and it annoyed me to no end until we could submit pictures because there were so many good pictures of this site available (even on Panaramio)

    @Glimmermir There is even more coincidence when it comes to Landmarks:

    • Vets, Petshops -> Magizoology
    • Libraries -> Hogwarts School
    • Playgrounds, Sports-Fields -> Magical Games & Sports
    • Banks -> Dark Arts
    • Chemists -> Mysterious Artifacts
    • Parks -> Magical Creatures
    • Government Buildings -> Ministry of Magic
    • Fountains -> Legends of Hogwarts

    @Osprey1 As for Panoramio, it was a good source for Images (in terms of quantity, not necessarily quality) but not the only one.
