Events like this are generally held in different places each time, if previous games are an indication. Note that they will not all be in the USA either.

I understand your frustration though. I'm someone who would pay to travel and go but they didn't invite me. I'm also puzzled as to why Indianapolis of all places. Who knows?
But as for "why not Miami?" Its summer in Florida....and hurricane season.
Why not San Francisco? It has an International Airport and Niantic is based out of there. They haven't had a Pokemon Go Event in San Francisco and that has always confused me.
Or even better, Orlando... universal, hit up the Harry Potter sections for rare finds etc .. thatd Ben dope. If that was was the case and I make that 3hr rive for sure , annual pass so I’m good to go lol
They picked Indianapolis because Simon Mall Property Groups Head Quarters are located here. It is also the very first in person event and will be MUCH bigger than a Community Day. There will be things available only at the event and a lot of photo opportunites as well as things like fortresses being physical like they have had at SDCC and AT&T store as an example.

Look at it more as a convention. They did/do similar with Ingress with anomalies.

the first event is a big test! so it helps to have it in the center of the country making it cheaper for everyone to fly there.
