When I select a number of ingredients to discard, my finger manipulating the slider covers the readout of the number currently selected; moving the number above the slider would fix this.
I agree with the OP, and I also agree with @Whitehorsematt . It's a hassle to have the slider and the +/- buttons on the same line. Also, the slider doesn't feel as intuitive to touch as I feel it should be.

+1 I have only been able to use the slider by manually hitting + a few times, and then moving the slider from there, its a bit of a hassle.
