unsuccessful traces

is there rhyme or reason to why a trace is successful or not? I have cast quite a few masterful spells in a row and had the magic resist then cast a fair or good spell and returned the foundable. I can come across a "medium" threat foundable and return it on the first try and then come across a low threat, use a potion and it will still take me several tries after the potion. Any suggestions, tips or tricks are much appreciated!

I found in PoGo when Pokemon fled it was neither here nor there, impact was minimal. In HP:WU they clearly fixed that problem. Flee rate is so much higher, especially with severe/emergency traces (about 10% return rate so far). The emotional impact on my game when losing high end encounters to departures has me thinking this feature is working just the way they want. Impact is incredible compared to PoGo.

I also seem to return more with bad casts than good ones, then again that could be proportional to my overall ability to cast which is definitely a work in progress. Oh, and I stopped using potions for traces found on the map (except severe/emergency), mostly because of the high flee rate. Save your potions for the Fortress, more bang for your buck.

I wish I had an answer or better understood it. I really don't like the randomness of the Confundibles.
