Particularly on the forum. It took months of asking before we started getting this info officially on here, without members cross posting from Discord / Reddit / WUtube.
Loving the update. Hope all kinks are worked out but if not I'm sure they will be soon. Thanks for keeping the game going and making changes as needed since the quarantine happened. I go on walks in the neighborhood and play and have really enjoyed the game.
Hi, any updates to solve the problem for us players who prestiged everything before your game update was provided to solve the bugs? I was among those who prestiged everything before the game update and i was so happy when I got 70 runes and 77 red books or so. Only to wake up the next morning to see another player boasting she got 870 runes and countless red books cos she started prestiging later only after the Niantic solved the issue by providing the app update. Please advise, thanks
Based on the above comment, I really, really wonder why wasn't a rollback performed. Not asking for the update to be cancelled or anything. Just asking that it would be done properly.
And it just spells what people have been afraid of: they probably just decided that giving the finger to long term/investment players that suffered with this loss is the most profitable/less troublesome course of action. Short term of course.
Yes, I spent more than $200 on the game to date for sure and err, in the end I got 70 runes, 11 new prestiged pages and only 10 red books (not 70, sigh), compared with others who prestiged after the game update. Now mostly I dun dare to press any buttons until Niantic gives an update. I accidentally pressed a few (horror!) and tested on Fluffy + the two Brilliant traces.
I am fine if NN wants to make changes and am happy to level the playing field for others, but err, please refund us hardcore pple who pressed the prestige button before NN realises the new game update has a bug.. thanks! Still waiting for solutions :(
I can think of a way this could be "fixed" without a rollback, but it would take tech not currently in WU to my knowledge.
Pokémon Go has the ability to stage phased events where individual players see individual spawn. When last years Go Fest in Chicago experienced weather issues, a makeup day was put in place for affected players. During that day, if you were one of the affected players, no matter where you were in the world, you saw Go Fest spawns just like if you were in Chicago.
If WU has access to this tech, they could use it to specifically target certain pages at certain days/times and affected players would get targeted spawns.
Just one of the possible ways they could remedy this.
@MrSciGuy While I agree with you, I think you didn't think about all variables. I am not an internet maniac or a social media guy and never will be.
When I give positive review I voice it, I mean orally. For games there are several ways in which you can express it, monetary commitment, spreading the word, showing the game, offering the game all sorts of things.
They never thanked me for my money and they don't apologize, I don't think that's fair. When I sent bug reports, I never got any answer or compensation whatsoever. How am I going to let them know what's the problem? Before it was small so I let it pass. Now it's big, I mean really. If we don't voice it we are going from players to sheeps.
Like some said : communication goes both ways.
I am not taking this personnally but I think we all know how game industries work nowadays. "Turning players into payers". I am not blaming the poor souls who are physically looking at our posts and answering the best way they can without creating a backlash (as it is so easy with some tempered people).
I am targeting the big guys behind, earning the golds, who don't give a **** about you or me. They have no clue what they're doing. At best they gave a launch date and said "get on with it, if not ready well send the changes anyway".
Don't see how this would be helpful. If they give us all the potions needed to get all of the hard stuff again, maybe one could begin to consider. I really wonder if there is no fragment tracking in an account's info. Well, we'll see what kind of reward they're thinking about. Here's to hope it won't be 100 coins, 10 runestones and a couple potions.
Don't think there's any true way to compensate months of effort other than returning the stuff anyway 😅.
I have spent a lot of $ on this game. If you steal what has been paid for and then fail to make recompense you are committing theft. Roll the game back to 2.12 and reset.
@ReyOfHope But you DID get what you paid for. You paid for energy or potions or runestones or whatever. They facilitated playing the game. None of those things guaranteed the fragments you lost. It is not theft because you paid for the gaming items / experience. You were able to use them.
There is no official statement yet in here or anywhere else about what will happen to those that lost their fragments. So no, until then, people will continue complaining and rightly so.
After that is done, then depending on what type of "compensation" they have planned and made final, there will be consequences for the future. For both sides.
People may decide to keep playing anyway, people may decide to request refunds for their lost investment, and/or they just move on and go play something else.
For Niantic, this update exposed that they are still horrible at communication, they don't test patches properly before they go live, and don't have the proper tools/experience/knowledge/authorization to undo possible heavy damage resulting from bugs and glitches. And, depending on their "compensation", don't truly care about their players, specially the dedicated ones, who were the most punished by this last update glitches.
It remains to be seen what will be the outcome of it all 🤷.
Having seen that screenshot above about there being nothing they can do to fix the lost foundables issue when it's clear that they could if they wanted to (I know they were tracking the number of each foundable caught in game as it was listed on the foundable) I am going to just activate the last TTD I need to finish this Brilliant Event and then give some serious thought as to whether or not to continue with this game.
To mess things up so badly for their players, to not communicate, and then to not bother fixing it are not signs that the game is being managed in a way that justifies spending time on it. If I continue it will just be for something to encourage me to go for a walk, and you can bet I'll be checking out alternatives.
Thankfully I didn't spend money on this in game, though it IS the reason I finally got a smart phone and data contract. If I were a regular in-game spender then, even if not affected by this bug, I wouldn't risk spending another penny. They could fix it, they won't unless it costs them. You'll only get treated well as a user if you ask for it with your wallet.
They may have just killed the game on a gamble that they'll make enough from new casual players to make up from what they've lost from active long-term players. They'll have lost a massive bunch of goodwill in the process, and their word of mouth advertising is going to be REALLY poor right now!
Roll-over fragment loss for many is a complete mess :
those who prestiged before warning got 1 frame level on most pages and a handful of runes/red books
those daily players since day-1 who waited until after update AND hotfix got 2-3 frame levels on most pages (or at least a good start on them), plus I've heard numbers of 200+ red books, 2000 scrolls and several hundred runestones. Not sure if that's exaggerated, but in any case it's the 2-3 frame levels which hurts - at the old spawn rates, it'll take SIX MONTHS to catch up on the losses
Plus there are other issues :
if you catch a fragment when you have roll-over fragments saved, you lose all the rollover fragments and the new one (bug)
The registry is unusable as it is booby trapped with the "repeat image landmine" - touch any placed image which has saved rollover fragments and you lose them immediately (no confirmation = poor design) for a handful of Family Exp
the rollover for placed fragments was poorly designed - for any and every placed fragment on a page which had not yet been prestiged, you effectively got a rollover bonus equal to the number of fragments needed to place the image
PLEASE tell us quickly what you are going to do to address these issues
200+ red books seems quite drastic. I was on 114 before the update and am now on 159, but I have also done some D5 R5 fortress sessions with friends, and completed the Brilliant Event. I would say 20 max for me. But those players who were already full gold on wands and things probably did well.
I do agree with observations about the registry. This needs to be looked at quite seriously. Not currently usable.
I hope they find a solution that works for everyone.
@FireNightingale - i can only say to you that i appreciate our being on each other’s friends list and can empathize and understand the thought process, and i too will be giving serious thought to the decision.

i wonder whether the HP copyright & trademark owners/licensors even know yet how badly their licensees Niantic/HPWU have messed up the goodwill associated with HP as intellectual property.
Once scenario not mention in this post: If you have mostly stayed out of the registry out since the update, it is likely that you have some never placed images that are now above count, say 15/11. If you should be so lucky to ENCOUNTER this Foundable again, you CANNOT FREE because it will reset conter counter and NOT roll over fragments. The summary screen will also tell you -"4 fragments" ! This means you can loose fragments WEEKS FROM NOW on rare spwans, unless they update.
I've got a few things to answer here, so it's just as well I've got plenty time on my hands at the moment.
@CeruleanGirl - yes, you're absolutely right I don't want people to be nice to me if they have a complaint to make. Here's the thing. 99%+ of people who have a problem with a business never complain. They just walk away and don't come back. So when someone does gather the courage to complain, that's an absolutely golden opportunity for me and my business to learn how to be better. If I allow them to sugar coat it in any way, then it diminishes that opportunity. I'll tell a brief story. Fairly recently, as a mother and son left my store after their first visit, I overheard the mother say something negative about us to her boy. I got up from behind the counter and went over to the door, and asked her to please explain. She came back in and did just that. Warts and all. I fixed the problem. My business is better because of it. I learned. She's a regular customer now.
@Punkyfins - I've had a funny old career and, from the dim and distant past, I've got a pretty good understanding of fallacy from a mathematical point of view. I'd be the first to admit though, that I don't have a lawyer's or classicist's understanding of the subtleties of the term "argumentum ad hominem." However from my limited understanding, the first and only ad hominem attack I can see in this thread belongs to @MrSciGuy - where they use the fact that people are new to the forum to imply that their points of view are irrelevant.
Despite that, I'll answer @Mrsciguy since I'm one of the people they're referring to. I don't do Yelp, but I've just had a glance at my TripAdvisor profile. Over a hundred positive reviews and just the one bad one. Really and truly, I take the time to congratulate good customer service whenever I receive it. In a remarkably similar stat, my WU dedicated IG feed, has 186 nice posts about the game, but now (incredibly sadly) one bad one.
@Magpie31 - I did qualify my comment about 200+ red books as possibly exaggerated, because it does seem a bit much...
However, I have a spreadsheet with my challenge fragments totals - on the three Symbols pages, I had around 2400 fragments built up (two were silver, one gold, none placed) - at 25 fragments per image placed, thats 96 images to place for 1200 WXP each, so around 96/3 = 32 challenge levels and 64 books lost, just from those three pages. 200 red books looks like a fair estimate for the whole of my registry where I lost all rollover fragments
@DadDeDav - I'm delighted to learn that I'm not the only nerd with an over-complicated spreadsheet that tracked my Wizards Unite progress.
So ... some back of an envelope sums. I reckon I've collected over 2500 fragments in the Challenge Pages that are now unnecessary to complete those gold pages. At an average drop of (conservative estimate) 6 per completed Wizarding Challenge, that's over 400 Runestones used that needn't have been.
You can easily double that number (conservative estimate) to account for the times I've lucked out and got fragments for things that were already completed. I probably don't need to tell some players about how many low-level challenges I played, before I finally lucked out and got my last few gold book fragments.
So ball-park 800 wasted runestones. And 800 unnecessary Wizarding Challenges. And several entire 24 hour days of my life spent doing those unnecessary challenges. That's before I think about how many hours of play it took to acquire those runestones in the first place.
So if there's going to be "compensation" for affected players, to make me happy again, it'll need to be on some sort of incredible scale.
So to re-iterate my pointof view, which I do fully appreciate not everyone agrees with, I have a vast preference for rolling back to the old target numbers, if it's possible.
Don’t want compensation, just want my 100s of lost foundables back so I can play the game I loved without feeling cheated. Not going to happen by the sound of it so have just uninstalled the game and won’t be going back unless something tangible is done to fix things properly for those that prestiged too early.
It’s only a game and not worth the hassle any more. Have played lots of online games and get that occasionally issues crop up. The response (if you can call it that) from Niantic though has been really poor. The idea is that you are supposed to look after your customers and do the right thing when you mess up, even if that does mean stepping back and taking a short term hit. Not going to happen with HPWU as it seems to be in their “too difficult / too much trouble” pile.
For me, the game data (fragments but who knows what else) has been corrupted because they released data changes on a version of the game in which it was not designed nor presumably tested. So it now feels like this isn't even my player account, not only because I have lost fragments (I have 10 pages prestiged and all now showing zero) but I don't know how many I've lost. I've spent so much on the game.
If Niantic were a professional IT company, aside from the testing and version control that would have been thorough and Comms clear, the system would have been taken down the moment they realised the problem, they'd have performed an analysis of financial transactions and then rolled back the entire system and database to before their data corruption.
I haven't done anything in the game since the data corruption.
@Eldraed I agree almost entirely. For me it is the worth the hassle to keep trying to get Niantic to listen, at least for the time being. I've said a number of times over the past couple of months that Wizards Unite was my sanity during lockdown. I've been a vocal supporter elsewhere online of everything until the last update, that Niantic have done to make the game more easily playable from home. When they had glitches with the remote Wizarding Challenges - not a problem - glitches happen. It got fixed and it's a great idea. More spawns? Great idea. Spell Energy on the ground? Great idea. Removing the need to walk portkeys for brilliant events? Great idea.
The update? Terrible idea. If they wanted to make the game easier (and I've said in another post, I fully understand why games need to get easier over time - I won't repeat all that) there's any number of ways they could have done it subtly and gradually. Up the rare spawns gradually. Increase the number of fragments from runestones gradually. Increase the XP from catches gradually. Run more events that allow large amounts of XP to be farmed. Run more events with specific rare foundables. I doubt any of these things would have caused an outcry from invested players - certainly not from me. I'm not claiming to be the inventor of all these - they've done similar things to all those ideas in Pokemon Go and I might have missed it, but I've seen no negativity there.
But I wish you well, buddy, I really do. And I do fully understand why you've uninstalled the game. It's still sitting there untouched on my phone for now, in the hope there's a resolution I can live with, so I can get back to being the vocal Niantic supporter that I've been throughout these past few years.
Ok so just a head's up for the "cash in" feature for foundables. If you don't cash in your extra fragments NOW it will reset your counts.
(See my post above for the premise of the problem). I managed to find a 2nd Philosopher's Stone so I could prove that the extras can still be gone. Here we go :
As i said, I had 18/33 fragments and it showed on the encounter. I wanted to return one this morning and the screen result showed -8 fragments (so it could match the max fragments on the page). I didn't cash in to see if this was a bug (like the +2 fragments that sometimes appears when you return a maxed out foundable).
On the 2nd attempt (1st image) I now have 10/10. So I tried to cash in and see if it would roll over the extras I had but no, the count resets to 0.
Which means if you don't cash in all your extras NOW (assuming you still have some like me) you are not able to return the same kind because it will lose all your extras and won't roll over once you prestige. I don't know if this is intended but the only way to transfer your extras on the next prestige page is if you manage to find the remaining foundables to prestige and not return the others.
Lucky for me it's only a Philosopher's Stone.
Warning : tested in challenge. It's the same deal : cash in before you make any wizarding challenges as it's random, you don't have any control over what you're getting. I lost fragments from Portable Swamps as well. And I guess fortress foundables are about the same deal.
I must say it's a very strange feeling that i have when I play, I don't know what will happen.
Also remove the feature of the result screen going straight into registry when I can place a fragment for brilliant registry. I am going to be sick in BE events, I don't want to place the brilliant foundable multiple times, you're making me lose Family Points. If it worked like the regular registry it would be worth, but brilliants get you more points when they're maxed.
I just did a 30 minutes session and am already fed up with it. You lose so much time and there's no way around it.
There is a lot of vitriol in many if the above messages. Yes Niantic have messed up, they have again introduced an update and published it just before the weekend and given this is not the first time an update has caused issues immediately before a weekend they should perhaps consider the wisdom of timing updates like this.
However, given that it is the weekend and that those working on solutions are likely doing this remotely from home, lets give them a chance to try and correct this.
Yes for many they have lost a considerable amount when compared to others and a few runestones and potions will not be satisfactory compensation. But lets give them time to work out what went wrong, what they can do to rectify the problem and what compensation may be appropriate.
It is very likely this update was pushed through in anticipation of bigger changes to come around the first year anniversary. We are likely to finally get those new lessons that have been coming soon for the past year, new chambers in the fortresses with new foes and probably whole sets of new foundables, spells and books to buy new abilities.
It is likely that the amount of testing and work on this update was cut simply due to the amount of work that they have to do to make the game playable at home in these unprecedented times. There have been a lot of changes introduced to help all of us, many of whom are stuck at home.
We have all become more generous of spirit in our united battle against the coronavirus, so many stories of people going above and beyond to help others. Let's not throw that generosity of spirit away over a game. Give Niantic the time they need to resolve the issues people are having, they have acknowledged the problem, I am sure an apology will be made very soon.
In the end it is only a game. If after they have done everything they can to resolve the problem you are still not happy, then walk away, there is no point spending more time and money on a game you no longer get satisfaction from but consider that more changes are coming, many I am sure you will enjoy and will make this mess a forgotten memory.
Honestly am super bummed by all of this. I feel like hard earned money and time I invested in this game prioritizing finishing certain fragments is all down the drain. The fact that I waited until the new update was released to prestige all pages and still lost overflow fragments of e.g. Dumbledore is an additional **** in the face. Very unhappy player.

Let’s assume there is no fix for lost fragments and “we have, what we have”
Furthermore, also assume the Devs have done their best
Isn’t it time to move on?
@OriginalCaruso No. If we do that then nothing changes going forward. Niantic needs to change. They need to be more open.
The days of Ingress secrecy are over.

Very disappointing, enjoy the game. Bye .
