how to battle oddities?

I just started playing this game and I made the mistake of skipping through the part of the tutorial that taught me about oddities and what the heck to do about them. I couldn't find any relevant information in existing threads so please aid me!
How do I defeat these things?

Oddities encountered outside of a Fortress will give you a taste of what battle is like inside a Fortress. Regular traces encountered outside a fortress is a one step process, simply trace the spell to cast it. With Oddities it's a two step process; first align your 'cursor' with the target by sliding your thumb along the screen. Once aligned, hold it there until you fill the 'tank', then cast your spell. Keep an eye on your Stamina (top left, green bar) vs. your foes (top right, red bar).

Oddities are battled in the same way you do battles in the fortress, they are one of my favorite parts of the game.
Move your finger to line up the aiming icon with the matching target on the oddity. The target will fill up over a short period. Then you will be given a spell to trace.
When it's the oddity's turn you trace the defensive spell to reduce the damage.
Don't forget that '**** and a swish!'

i battled an oddity where u line up the aiming icon. I wasn’t fast enough to attack. I ended up defending instead of attacking. Until I lost the battle.
