Do you have to have the game open to track your walking distance? I know on other games, you can have they game off and it will steal track your walking distance. You just have to agree to allow the other games to do it.
@RussellFaraday I believe that interaction with an inn, greenhouse or fortress will typically trigger an update but this is based on anecdotal evidence and fuzzy recollections of other similar systems.

Yes. You have to have the game open. Many of us are asking for an Adventure Sync type so HOPEFULLY they'll listen to the community.
There appears to be with a lag in crediting walking distance too. Not sure when it triggers an update.

Just guesswork from what I've seen and experimented with:
It has an update period every 4-5mins.
If under ~.03km, it does not count (if you have the game open while cutting your grass, you won't get squat).
