One thing that really bothers me in the films is the Half Blood Prince.

In the book Harry hides the book in the room of requirement in a cupboard with the diadem marking the location.

Why would Ginny take him in the movie and ask him to close his eyes. Harry would not know the location (or existence) of the diadem when he needs to find it in the last movie.

@WerewolfChaser That is how I feel about the entirety of Prisoner of Azkaban!

@WerewolfChaser I know!! They change around a lot. Ginny and Harry don’t **** until after felix felicis, but in the movie it’s opposite. The occlumency lessons go longer in the book. All the sessions with Dumbledore delving into memories and Tom Riddle background. I love that book, and the movie just doesn’t do it justice. I was glad in a way they split DH into two movies, because as it was, they had to cut out a lot to fit into two. If it had been one, it’d have been terrible.

And the dark mark over the astronomy tower. That is what made them rush back to Hogwarts after their venture into the cave.

I can cope with changes if they don't affect the storyline like this but I still don't like it.

I read the books one after the other then go back to the first book. To make this easier I bought the complete collection on kindle.

I guess we are all HP purists when it comes to our love for the Potter-verse. Subtle changes are annoying and hard to stomach but what can we do. It would be fun to make a list of how the movies varied from the books. But I imagine someone has already done that some where.

This is why, whenever a great story comes out in print, I wait for the movie. Watch the movie(s) first, then read the book(s) after. Going in this order is delightful, because you get so much more from the books. Going in the opposite order is always disappointing. @WerewolfChaser, I got my Stephen Fry audio-books via VPN. It's silly that they're not available for us dirty colonists here in the US to download.

@Acumen i am the opposite- I like to read the books first to imagine what things would look like and then watch the movies to see how well they got it.

For instance Dobby was exactly how I imagined him to look in the movies.

I am with @ClairabusGryff Plus, how would anyone understand Prisoner without the books? Marauders... Who?

Agreed @Magpie31 - there were so many things/items/etc in the books you had to have some kind of context to understand the importance of the things.

I am disappointed with so many things in the movie world and I understand why they can't fit everything in. The parts the screenwriters often lump together don't make sense to me, along with how they set priorities in the movie/show.

It still irks me that the house elf plight wasn't even mentioned, along with half a dozen other little details. GOT had tons pulled out, Tolkien, outlander, the expanse, etc. No wonder so many authors walk away when they sell the rights to their stories. I think I might try your way @Acumen, it sounds like at least that way I could be delightfully surprised by the depth of the book post-show.

@Acumen That is the absolute best use of a VPN. Stephen Fry is absolutely delightful and nobody else should be allowed to narrate Harry Potter.

Ugghhhh!!! So Much Effort!!! 😂😂😂 nooooo!!

And don't get me started on having to get up and pause it on the laptop!!! after pressing pause on tv remote 5 times and shouting at it til realise! 😂😂😂

i agree that movie adaptations rarely surpass the original book, and the HP series are no exception. (i would admit that the film version of The Godfather was way better than Mario Puzo’s novel.)

jkr is writing the Fantastic Beasts movies direct, without first waiting to write novels and then adapt for the screen, so at least she potentially cuts off criticism from purists that way (unless she contradicts HP canon like the age of Minerva Mcgonnagall)
