what to do about friend code posts everywhere ?!

i understand the need to share friend codes ... especially when adding friends and sending gifts become requirements /roadblocks in gaming progress.
what i don’t understand is why there are friend code sharing posts EVERYWHERE, in all kinds of threads, whether relevant to friends/gifting or completely random threadjacking.
is it like graffiti tagging ? or shotgun-pattern spacing to maximize chances of getting added ?

Only joking. It’s mainly new posters @kiheikid How’s about we suggest one thread to use? Which do you suggest?
What about with the initial log in there is an immediate request for your friend code to be posted in a designated area if you choose. Or in the menu on the hamburger (the three dashed lines) there is a friend code headline, or in rules of posting there's a friendly note about posting codes to a specific area?
There is an entire Forum Section dedicated to Friend Codes:
https://community.harrypotterwizardsunite.com/en/categories/friend-codes
Why not direct new people there?
I don't know the background of the forum base they use (@Ginnungagap, @Imaginatio was that one of you?). But is it possible for the forum to move posts with a certain something, similar to the cursing bot, to a designated space? So if the bot runs across a post with a friend code it moves it into that place and notifies the poster that it is there? Similar to the moderation notification?
@Bormacska It is a "Vanilla Forum" (https://vanillaforums.com/en/software/)
I knew one of you brilliant people had the answer! Thank you @Lucoire! 🧙♂️ ✨
I would love some friends from all over please add me

If you think it's bad now, you have no idea what it was like when this forum started. Friend codes were being posted EVERYWHERE. Literally hundreds within hours. Which is why wonderful @HPWULola started the friend code area as Lucoire posted above. And manually moved and consolidated all those posts into the appropriate area. And yet some people keep starting new friend code threads in other areas besides the friend code area...
post #8 ^ ... sigh
oblivioso reverso !!
rats, another made-up spell that probably failed, hehe
@Dewin99 - i have no idea what thread would be best, but i think it won’t matter. this is herding cats on a scale bigger than Ben-Hur. people, especially relative newcomers, will not have the time or patience or inclination to search out where to go for friend-ing and will continue to just post wherever ... in that respect, maybe this phenomenon is more akin to littering than graffiti-tagging.
i do like the bot idea moving posts automatically to friend code section if friend code is detected, if that idea is workable
one other idea might be for veterans to resolve not to send out invites to folks who randomly post friend codes where they don’t belong, but i suspect many of us already do that ... and as long as the game organizers here insist on making add-a-friend a requirement for tadk progression in that event, it might make sense for there to be a dedicated friend code thread just for that event ... it will be more organized (theoretically) than combing thru hundreds/thousands of individual friend code threads in the friend code section of this forum
other than this all, i am tapped for ideas but am hopeful the collective brain trust here will come through with a workable solution (even if patched together with chewing gum and duct tape)
Thanks everyone for this feedback, and yes @Dogoutlaw is right, we have come a long way! But there is always room for improvement.
I am going to hide 'Friend Codes' from Recent Discussion and do my best to move all threads about Friend Codes over to that section. I'll brainstorm with the other Mods on how we can tackle this in the long run. Organization and neatness adds a lot to the Community Experience!
1. I really want to know how to edit/delete a post. One of mine obviously.
2. I hope I haven't been acting like a cat on threads primarily because I am not a fan of cats, real or musically. Also because my sarcasm and wit that I think I pull of beautifully apparently doesn't according to my kids.
@Li11ee you can only edit your own posts for an hour after they were originally posted, and we can't delete our posts at all.
During the first hour after you create a post, you will see a gear in the top right corner of the post. Tap on it to be able to edit the post.
Thx @MtPollux
@Li11ee if you're wanting to delete/edit a post where you put your friend code (to prevent never-ending invitations), it's not possible as mentioned above. The only work around is to change your friend code. You can change it unlimited times and don't lose your current friends, so there's no harm in doing so.
@HPWULola Thanks! I hope you all can think of a way to have the forum auto categorize friend code posts to the appropriate area. You had already hid the friend code area from recent discussions, which has been amazing. Did you ever get that tool up and running that would suggest other threads when someone tries to start a new thread?
@HPWULola Thank you! That's a lot of grunt work and I hope your devs might be able to find or create an easier (and more automated) solution that works with the back end of the forum.
how about having a bot automatically delete any friend code post that is over 4 weeks old ???
or
@HPWULola can pick the right length of time to have passed for auto-delete
(i know it does not solve short term problem but this is a longer term solution)
Can i just say @Li11ee that your post made me giggle- your wit wasn't wasted there! 😂
My kids also have no appreciation of my sense of humour! 🤷🏼♀️
@kiheikid - The forum is not linked to the core database, it is a stand alone product therefore looking up player codes after removing white space and formatting to compare partial text strings (regular expressions in programming parlance) is not possible
Unfortunately for @HPWULola it is a manual task trawling through posts
@OriginalCaruso - that’s a bummer
@kiheikid - Actually it’s a good thing...
If Niantic developed their own website there would be less resources to deliver WU
Linking to the core WU database presents a security risk. No direct access means hackers can’t get access to login credential, system data or take WU down

@MrsCDub There is a forum section specificly dedicated to Friends Codes. See here: https://community.harrypotterwizardsunite.com/en/categories/friend-codes
That's where your post belongs and will even be appreciated
wow, @Lucoire , ordinarily i probably would have called you out for adding in that last bit while you called out the person in post #23 by name, but since i agree it is especially ironic (among other words) that this thread is not the place for posting friend codes, i would just thank you and add that you forgot to include the person in post #8 and the person who started it all in post #2 (ya can’t even joke about these things without attracting oblivious followers)
