not everyone who plays the game participates in various other platforms like reddit or discord, and hopefully both the WU developers and certain members here will understand that the special assignments tab within the app is the best place/method for communicating with everyone who plays (ie, we already are here)
to the defenders of the faith ... please, no more presumptuous “let them eat cake” remarks like “it was announced/disclosed in reddit or discord”
My $0.02 worth and a brief explanation of why I think this is the root cause
I am a programmer by trade. Niantic have a server (more probably a server farm) to which the phone / tablet application periodically connects hence the need for a connection to the Internet
Some of the WU application resides on the phone / tablet whilst other parts reside on the server
It seems the event notification code is held on the phone / tablet which is why the information can be mined once pushed via an update / download of assets
IMHO this is an IT architectural problem which I strongly suspect Niantic are working to change - the event notification should just be an advertising banner with the underlying information held on the server embargoed until release date / time

A couple folks in the forum with development experience have explained that the "coming soon" banner is probably tied to event data which could be mined by third parties who like to post spoilers. It makes sense that they'd want to take measures to prevent that sort of thing but the lack of a coming soon banner on the special assignments page at this point, just over 24 hours before the event is set to begin, doesn't make any sense at all. Especially since all the event details were posted on Wizards Unite Hub three days ago.
It's not a big deal to me because I generally get all the updates I need from this site, but I can see how someone who doesn't subscribe to this forum or follow HPWU on social media would be annoyed. I was chatting with my son about it over coffee and pancakes the other day, and he says (based on his experience playing PoGo) that Niantic is pretty well known for a general lack of communication.

That site is worth adding to your bookmarks, because it's pretty handy. It's fully understandable to be annoyed by the lack of in-app communication, but it is what it is. Until that's remedied, which may or may not ever happen, it's better to just find an alternative, more reliable source for information.
Wow, @WerewolfChaser! That's pretty funny. It definitely seems like they're struggling with this one. Hopefully the event itself goes smoothly without any weird bugs.
Forcing purchase of a Baruffio isn’t a good move - we should be able to make our own minds up - and given the strong hint to use Tonic For Trace Detection I would rather hold off and not buy anything until I know what I need on the day

@OriginalCaruso there's a thread that explains it. It's mainly for new players! It's supposed to show up at level 5. We all just get it because new additions are given to everyone to keep balance :)

That's exactly what my wife did, so smart she is. Me, I was so annoyed I was being forced to buy a potion I have no love for, I failed to catch on in time and wasted 100 gold. I was not please when she told me how she got around it, though I was happy for her.
@ZookiTabooki me too! I was just about to engage a horned serpent with my baruffio going when it came up! I was so annoyed & keen to not lose the serpent i just bought it. I got the serpent- but in retrospect would definitely have swapped that for the gold!! Lol. Oh man!!
Less than two hours to go! The event starts at 1:00 PM CDT for me (UTC/GMT -5 hours), so I'll be taking a late lunch so I can head over to my favorite spot to get started. Round one.... FIGHT!
You're right, @SumaHan. I'm sure the brilliant ones will be everywhere, but there's no telling for the regular oddities, unless they'll start spawning during daylight hours for the event. There is one place in town where I can usually snag a few erklings no matter what time of day it is. Worse case scenario, I'll head there. 🧙
I’m really happy that all the ddddities are out. I might finally finish the SOS task and place their image. Ilso like hate we can differentiate between the normal and Brilliant Portmanteaus. I even got the azkaban escapee as a normal oddity which was cool.

yes, go to suitcase, and tap the gears icon in top left corner of your screen - there should be a red dot indicating new assets to download

@JulieJubz I'd already had to restart four times in the ten minutes before that, so I just went with it instead of trying anything.
As to what is said, once you buy it, you are "encouraged" to look at the deals in the shop before leaving.
