@ZookiTabooki Thanks for the response. I am currently level 31. I have gotten a couple of 4s and a few 3s, and I believe most of them have been pretty recent. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a 5, but I didn’t pay much attention at first before I realized the number had significance.
@Acumen Thanks! I was afraid it was just random and it’s sounds like it is. I don’t have the best luck with random stuff in games. Most of my levels are in the twenties. Mysterious Artifacts is 33 and Oddities is 41 because of the Community Day and Dragon Day. So maybe I just need to level up more.
This **** for Red Spell Books only gets worse. I just got to Rank 100 . Imagine my dismay when I noticed that the XP needed to rank up again jumped to 2520 . Yes , 2520 . Whoever decided this needs to check their math . This stall tactic will only exacerbate the problem . There may be an issue with future lessons or levels . Those of you who have extra scrolls with nowhere to put them are in for a shock . Do the developers want players to be sitting on several hundred scrolls without the corresponding red books ? And before anyone jumps in with “Why don’t you fill in the other two skill trees” , I have done so . The ratio between scroll and red book is way out of **** . And the slower a player progresses through the game , the more extra scrolls there will be .
The only option I see is to focus on Fortress challenges and not bother so much with foundables - which defeats the much of the purpose of the game IMHO
I do agree the game is imbalanced with regard to red books and scrolls, as has previously been proposed, exchanging scrolls for books is a sensible way to resolve the impasse. We just need the WU product owner to agree the change and pass the requirement to the developers to implement
About runestone numbers. I noticed getting higher numbers as I prestiged pages, so I thought that was the link. I still get 2’s, but I also get the higher numbers frequently as well. Excluding the oddity frames, I have six families with gold frames, and three with silver. Of course, I could have made this link up in my head, as has been mentioned.... who knows.
@WerewolfChaser Wow! That's a nice haul. I just maxed my first family today, Oddities no less. Your insight shows me that high level runestones are more plentiful based on family rank instead of wizarding rank. Good to know.
@ZookiTabooki I think the rune level is completely random.
Today I returned 137 foundables and earnt 7 runes.
This is obviously not an in-depth analysis with my total of 12 runes earnt!
I shall continue to record the rune levels that I receive and will report back if I see a pattern emerging.
I should note that I have a terrible relationship with the RNG Gods. I can go for many days without receiving a gold drop. Today was one of them.
I am yet to see a dragon since the day of the dragons. Nobody could tell me to play more as I've returned 3,015 foundables since the day of the dragons.
My regional dragon is the Opaleye which is only medium threat so many people presumed they would spawn more frequently than the Fireball and the Vipertooth.

I have reached a point that I feel like I may have something to add in people's quests for these books.
Unfortunately my method does not work for solo players, but if you can get a single other person (spouse, friend, etc) it does wonders. Ideally 1 of the 2 people should be a magizoologist so that they can revive the other.
I am an Auror and my wife is a Magizoologist. We continued to progress through the tower using lvl 3 runes until we got to about challenge rank 60-70. Then we switched to level 4. We fight at the highest level that we could while consistently finishing with over 1 min remaining (typically we go for about 2.5 min remaining on average). When we fight 4 or 5 star oddities (which would normally be left to a professor) we use a strong extimulo potion which allows us to finish it with ease. Since we can brew 6 in a day and we are given 1 as well as the chance for getting them in encounters, we can do about 6 runs without depleting our potion stock. If the timing seems a little tight we may also use one on a 3 star or a 5 star death eater/acromantula as those also take a lot of hits. If you a working with a different group, just do the same based on the different profession. In all, this allows us to do a fortress run in 5-7 min using about 40 energy. For more bang for your buck, do this at a sponsored tower. Using this method we have gotten up to rank 100 and comfortably do dark 1 together. Additionally to help conserve focus, magizoo should revive when dead rather than heal. They should also make sure they do defense/protego power which will mean they have to heal themselves less and keep additional power from being over 50% health and retaining beast.
Using this method, it takes roughly 3 runs through the fortress to gain a rank. That takes maybe 25 min at most, so we generally gain at least one rank per day. For instance, now in Dark 1 we get a little over 600 challenge xp per run (lvl 4 rune) which takes about 7 min. Less than a couple of weeks ago, our max comfortable was Forest IV. Hopefully, that gives an idea of how much we were able to progress since we switched to this method. Our level 5 runes we have been saving for events that have increased challenge xp (although that may change if we run out of lvl 4).

@OriginalCaruso nice! What rank have you gotten to? We expect to be maxxed on our skill trees at some point in Nov now. Just a month ago that seemed unthinkable.
@ZookiTabooki thanks! We are enjoying getting stronger and hope we can help others in our area gain more quickly with our help. The game is a lot more fun for me when I can enjoy it with others.
Sounds like a solid strategy, @Ginnungagap. My approach as a mostly solo player has been similar. I generally stuck to the Tower chambers until level 60. Now, at level 76, my fortress runs are usually on Forest II or III. I could handle a higher level, but I try to stay at levels I can complete without burning through too many potions so I can be fully restocked by the following day. I'll go ahead and use level 5 runestones when I have several for each family. Like you though, I like to hold on to a good supply of those to use during special events. Doing a few challenges each day gets me two spellbooks every couple days. Sometimes I'll do more, sometimes less. I'm happy with my current pace. It'll be another 5 months before I complete the red book requirements on my current lesson plan. Maybe not quite that long when I factor in events, achievements, the three we get each month with daily treasure, and whatever else. I'm close to completing the silver level Elite Foes achievement, so that'll be another seven books! The gold level awards 15 spellbooks but requires 1000 elite foes defeated, so it'll probably be 2021 before I finish that one. That sounds like a joke, but it isn't. 😄
Lot of good ideas here. I have also run out of level 1 runestones now and they anyways don't move the needle!
@Ginnungagap@Acumen With your strategies do you get the feeling you may run out of runestones soon? I have depleted my level 2s now and it seems soon the level 3 will also get exhausted.
Lastly, is there a jump in the challenge exp requirement after level 100? I thought it would be 2020 at level 100 and increase 20 for each level until 125, after which it is a flat 2500.

@Pamdm I am currently behind where I wanted to be this month due to unforeseen factors. However, I am currently rank 102. I usually use lvl 4 runes. I currently have 50 remaining lvl 4 runes and 65 lvl 5 runes (that I save for when there might be bonus xp or larger groups to play with). Assuming I didn't prestige anything and get additional runes, I currently get just over 600 challenge xp per run which means 30000 challenge xp from the lvl 4 runes before I run out. That equates to from the lvl 4 runes alone I have 11 more ranks that I can achieve. Obviously the lvl 5 would get me significantly more xp. I figure that with my continued ranking by catching things I should be in good shape to get all of my red books. My lowest registry rank is 45 which means I will usually get a higher level rune when I rank any of the pages. However, I am gold with the initial tier on all pages (except oddities) which does make ranking them a little slower. Thankfully a recent update increased family xp for things you had already placed.
This weekend I setup a time that some people around the area are going to meet at the Simon mall here. I think we can get between 15k-20k challenge xp using lvl 5 runes in the couple hours we are going to run it. Other than that, I drag my wife out for 6 challenge runs a day (takes 30-45 min). That equates to a bit over 3600 xp a day or over 100k xp in a month. As you can see from @WerewolfChaser that pace for a month should have me over rank 150 and close to completing all my red spell books for my profession.
PS by edit: If there is 2x challenge xp via event/community day in sponsored towers again.... 1 run with just my wife and I with lvl 5 rune is around 1500xp. Since a run take 5-7min (skip potion and death animations!) we can do about 8 an hour or 24 in the 3 hour window. That is a potential for over 35000 challenge xp in just that 3 hour event window!

@Titianium sorry for the late reply... good question. I haven't seen a list though I can give you an idea from my experience so far.
There are 5 sets of frames under Challenges;
Books - fragments for this series of frames can be had from just about any chamber in the fortress. 'Books I' fragments are more likely to be found in the Ruins chambers. The rest I have acquired everywhere up to Forest chambers.
Joke Products - These can be found predominantly in Tower chambers. High level Ruins chamber with high level runestone will bring these out as well.
Magical devices - Really rare. Seeing more of these in high level Forest chambers. I suspect I'll see more in Dark chambers.
Symbols of the Wizarding World - I find these in high level Tower chambers and plentiful in the Forest chambers.
Wands of Dumbledore's Army - Also really rare. Mine came from portkeys.
Just to add some of them are split. Magical Devices I, I mainly get in forest 5. However, Moody's Sneakoscope I get in Dark I. It seems like the drops changed a bit and so the very early levels have a very large range of rewards. By the end of Forest and beginning of Dark there tends to only be about 5 different things that you will get with very little overlap if any between floors.
I have received wand fragments from high level towers and low level forest chambers, unfortunately I don't know the runes I was using at the time (I'm a haphazard player 😅). I'll try to recreate some over the next few days (and pay attention to what I've used! 🤣)
@WerewolfChaser Thanks for sharing that info. Two spell books a day was my target which I already struggle with at challenge tank 58. Guess I will have to revise my targets!
@Ginnungagap You seem to have an amazing System going! Currently I only do about 220 exp per 7 min in low forest chambers with lvl3 runes and solo. So mostly I die once to save potions.
Been pestering the wife for some time to start playing but alas she is not that interested in the potter world. So it's a slow lonely grind for me apart from once or twice a month I can connect with players in my city.
Have read through this one and there are lots of good ideas...but hoping someone can help me with a more specific action plan to accomplish my red book goals...now that I've hit level 100 and the required challenge XP has jumped.
Currently a level 12 Professor w/ max deterioration hex, 3/8 defense charm, 7/8 proficiency charm; challenge level 100; 205 max spell energy; 4 initial focus (max of 15)
I can only play solo during the week, and group on some weekends. I can play about an hour to 90min per day at a sponsored fortress.
I can clear Tower V solo with no potions, no dying. I can clear Fortress I solo dying once and 1-2 potions (depending on opponent). Fortress II/III require dying once and 4-5 potions. The challenges I seem to run into are big spiders or elite opponents that i'm not proficient against, lack of larger runestones and lack of focus.
1) With the tougher enemies, I use a strong Exstimulo potion (or 2) ; when paired with Deterioration Hex, it does a decent amount of damage to all enemies; but not really sustainable for long term b/c I'd have to use 5-10 day x 7 days a week = more than I can brew in 24hrs
2) Runestones - so this leads to another strategy question; early in the game I was taking down every confoundable I encountered, but now that i've gold prestiged most common pages, I find myself conserving spell energy and only targeting the ones I need for other pages. As you can imagine, I'm not leveling up as fast and thus not earning runestones as fast. Which means that on a given day, I may have 15-20 level 5 stones, similar 4 stones, and 40-50 level 2 and 3 stones. For those of you with hundreds of stones, do you still take down all confoundables no matter what? Something else I could be doing to earn more stones?
3) Focus - I'm maxed at starting with 4 focus. If I use my defense charm on myself (3 focus), that leaves me 1 and not enough to cast Deterioration on the 1st enemy...which means less damage per strike and more spell energy. I can use the strong invigoration draught to give me 3 additional, but brew times on it (7hrs) make it tough to keep plenty on hand while brewing Stimulo's 24/7. So I tend to stick with DH vs defense. You can't really do that in Forest I-III solo as you'll die quickly. So that's why I tend to play Tower V more often than not. With a level 4-5 stone, I can earn 250-290 challenge XP in Tower V. 300-350 in Forest I, 340-390 in Forest II and 380-430 in Forest III.
So based on this, what would you guys recommend as the best path to leveling up? Should I spend my level 4-5 stones in Tower V and level 2-3 stones in Forest? I have over 300 level 1 stones, so guessing probably use those in Tower I to conserve spell energy? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
@IAMBLAKUS I think the easiest thing would be to try to accumulate rune stones during the week and then group for a few hours on the weekend. If you do that, your group will likely be able to do dark 1/2 with minimal potion usage. You will receive more xp for your time and your runes. The runs themselves will also be quicker allowing less time consumption as your potions will be restocked to use where most effective to cut time and energy consumption. This should also make your rune consumption more manageable as well. If you focus on the time you can do it with others, you will be getting 600+xp per 7ish minute run (Dark 1 I believe is usually about 605 challenge xp at a sponsored inn with 2 people and a level 4 rune).
It was 1 week ago at about this time that I posted my method for obtaining books. I was just about at challenge rank 100 at that time. Here is my progress after a single week. I am hoping this will help others judge its effectiveness.
@Ginnungagap wow! Thanks for sharing all that advice! My daughter is Magiz to my being Auror so thats a solid strategy that dhould help me fill out my tree. Il have to tell her this is what we are doing lol! Think shes only lvl 21 at min though & can struggle in chamber 7, so just need to wait ss she builds up her skills.
@Titianium i havd detailed data for about 2 months now on what fragment was found where, im just finishing organising the data then will do a post of the stats & any patterns found. It is pretty much as @ZookiTabooki says, but il add the solid data asap.

@IAMBLAKUS I'm not too far behind you, just starting to dabble in dark chambers. I believe the best strategy moving forward will be to focus on the highest chamber you can clear without potions, and use no. 4 runestones. The bulk of my family XP will come from these battles as I can do many in a short amount of time while available energy is the only limiting commodity.
I save my no. 5 runestones and potions for dark chambers. It takes me over a week to generate enough potions to battle just a few dark chambers before I run out. So the bulk of my challenge XP doesn't come from these battles but rather chambers I can clear without potions in a shorter period of time, and daily.
I still take down every confoundable I encounter. If I need more energy, I go out and get more. Ranking up families asap is top priority for decent access to runestones. 'Gotta return 'em all' I say. 😁
As for focus, the way I see it I won't be able to tackle dark chambers on my own without defence bonuses activated when carrying 2 or more enhancements into battle. So casting Protection and Profficiency charm on myself immediately upon entering a chamber is nothing short of necessary. With that said, I brew and use 2 potent invigorating potions for each dark chamber I engage. This gives me 10 focus total (with the initial 4) which is enough to cast both charms once, covering me for the entire chamber battle. I usually wait until I clear the first foe before I begin using the DHex, or Protection Charm on a battle buddy if I'm not alone.
If you find you are flush with no.5 runestones, use them in Ruins and Tower chamber 5; the goodies are incredible.
@IAMBLAKUS, I'm also a Professor but trailing behind you as far as stats are concerned. I'll hit challenge rank 80 tonight after another fortress run, and I'm not at all excited about the unreasonable jump in XP required once I hit 100. I also have the maxed out deterioration hex and +4 initial focus.
I'll cast the protection charm on myself at the beginning of the challenge, which leaves me with +1 focus. If I can get away with fighting any level of pixie or a common werewolf as my first foe, I don't bother with invigoration draught because I don't really need the deterioration hex. If a pixie or common werewolf isn't the first foe to appear in the chamber, I'll wait 15 seconds to see what the second foe is. If I'm still out of luck on the second foe, that's when I'll go ahead and down some invigoration draught, cast deterioration hex, and get started.
My strategy changes a bit depending on the number of foes I have to fight. If I'm in Forest Chamber II and I have six foes to deal with, I know all but the first one will award only +2 focus. When that is the case, I'll save my hex and/or potions for the more difficult ones. Hopefully there will be a couple pixies in the mix, because I can knock them out pretty easily without any help. If I'm stuck with nothing but death eaters and acromantulas though, I'll have to burn through more potions than I'd like to, and that's just how it goes sometimes.
As far as runestones go, there's no way around it. You've got to snatch up lots of foundables if you want to earn the higher level stones at a steady pace.
@ZookiTabooki@Acumen if I'm not mistaken, any enhancement will help your related boosts. That means if you use a barufio, you have 30 min of extra enhancement without requiring focus and allows you to get 3 with defense/pro power. It also gets you the double wizard xp obviously. Main thing would be your increased defence and power enabling you to do higher levels quicker.

@ZookiTabooki I've made a start on my rune level stats.
This is for the last 24 hours. My families are mostly maxed, the exceptions are Magizoology which is at lvl 64 and Legends of Hogwarts at level 50.
I returned 189 foundables and these are my runestones earnt:
Plenty of food for thought here...

I just discovered this in the Achievements file. Defeat 100 Elite foes, and earn 7 Red books. If they only showed up more often in the Fortress.

@Ginnungagap Great insight, thanks for sharing.
@WerewolfChaser - I expect you are aware of checking the weather icon... increased chance of dragons when (predictably) a dragon is shown for the day
Since the Day of the Dragons I have encountered 2 on separate days
@Ginnungagap - I seem to have stumbled upon a similar / same conclusion
@OriginalCaruso nice! What rank have you gotten to? We expect to be maxxed on our skill trees at some point in Nov now. Just a month ago that seemed unthinkable.

@Ginnungagap L35 Professor, need 115 more red books plus a ton of green books to complete the lesson, a couple of months at least
I regularly play with a L35 Magizoologist which helps enormously, not many players despite being in a large city (Birmingham, UK)
We do need a chat channel like Ingress without which it’s very difficult to finish the last SOS Fortress challenge - notwithstanding it being bugged
Lot of good ideas here. I have also run out of level 1 runestones now and they anyways don't move the needle!

Thanks again Ginnung that's great info!!
@ZookiTabooki @Acumen if I'm not mistaken, any enhancement will help your related boosts. That means if you use a barufio, you have 30 min of extra enhancement without requiring focus and allows you to get 3 with defense/pro power. It also gets you the double wizard xp obviously. Main thing would be your increased defence and power enabling you to do higher levels quicker.
