Players in rural areas seem to be at a big disadvantage. Inns and fortresses are only driving distance away.

It isn’t unlikely that additional locations will be added. Unfortunately this was a big complaint when Pokémon Go came out and Niantic dude nothing.

Rural and suburban areas are severely disadvantaged. There are 2 inns and 2 greenhouses near me. You have to cross a very busy road where there is no sidewalk, crosswalk, or traffic light to get to one of the inns. One of the greenhouses is on the corner of the street next to the same dangerous road - definitely not safe for children. The other inn and greenhouse is in a cemetery several blocks away. Again, no sidewalks and "closed" at dark. Trying to play the game after work proves very difficult. It would be helpful to be able to suggest locations for the inns and greenhouses. I know the point is to walk around, but there is an entire neighborhood here and no inns/greenhouses that are safe to access.

POIs (inns, greenhouses and fortresses) are based on portals submitted by lngress players at least level 10 and, in a few countries, level 40 Pokemon Go players. They are reviewed and approved by higher level Ingress players. Niantic staff cannot add POIs in your area because they are not familiar with it. If your area has no POIs , you can become an Ingress player and after reaching level 10, you can submit portals.

Are you saying we have to start playing 'Ingress Prime' and reach level 10 in order to submit portals?

When you go to the city to shop or run errands, you can take advantage during that time in the game.

Pokemon go is slowly rolling out submissions, so I'm sure WU will introduce them too. But understand that when ingress first introduced submissions there ended up being a huge backlog of millions of portals. It took several years to eventually remove it before the new submission and review system went live. Now I imagine the slow rollout to Pogo (and I'd guess later, WU) is due to Niantic not wanting to explode the submissions queues again, already the quality of submissions has started to drop as Pogo players make accounts just to submit new gyms/pokemon stops.

I'm doing my bit during my usual travels and walks in rural areas (I've already turned 1 village from a single portal/gym village into a village with now 8 or 9 portals/gyms/pokemon stops). However, I'm pretty sure that new portals are not currently being imported into WU (having seen that several I created before global release, and after global release have not yet appeared in WU).

For now, it's a case of staying patient, or taking the plunge into Ingress (you may like it, it's very community based and not actually as complicated as it first seems :) )

already the quality of submissions has started to drop as Pogo players make accounts just to submit new gyms/pokemon stops. - how is this possible when you need to be level 40?

Cache1337, Cespar meant PoGo players are making ingress accounts in order to submit portals they hope will become pokestops and gyms. They only need to reach lvl 10 in ingress before they can submit portals, and portals in ingress have the chance of becoming pokestops/gyms in PoGo or Greenhouses/Inns/Chambers in HPWU.

On the upside - rural areas get Inns with Green Roofs that give more / higher energy than the others. I think Niantic is making an effort to help us folks that live farther out have a good gaming experience. I might be luckier than some others, because my local medical center has an Inn & Greenhouse right next to eachother that are always open - - so I can play during lunchtime.

Jurassic World Alive managed to place player interactive points in rural areas using Google maps.

Google maps knows what a firehouse is, stores, parks, police stations, lawyers, car repair.

It's 2019, it's not like this information doesn't exist and can't be accessed.

Cell phone usage is also tracked, which determines population density for specific areas.

    Step into this century!

I would pay $19.99 to put an inn, greenhouse and fortress on my property that only I can see...you Devs are missing a huge revenue stream!

If niantic doesn't do anything for their rural players they are going to suffer a hit to their already limited player base.

The POI are from the same dataset that Niantic's other games are based on.

In general, POI are places of:

    • historic (castles, statues, war memorials),
    • educational (libraries, nature-information boards, museums),
    • artistic (murals, statues, theater & opera houses, art galleries)
    • recreational / social (parks, playgrounds, fountains, etc)

    value.

Economic value on its own does NOT make a good POI and K12 Schools are EXPLICITY blacklisted.

And POI must be HUMAN CREATIONS... an ancient tree is not POI worthy.

And all POI require "safe pedestrian access" and need to be open to at least a certain number of people (POI on private single-family residential property are also a no-go). POI that may interfere with emergency services (obviously) are also blacklisted.

Also, keep in mind that the overwhelming number of POI aren't created by algorithms, they have been submitted by players (originally Ingress-players only, recently Pokemon-Players have joined) and have been curated by players (Ingress Players only, google "OPR" for more info) - to ensure a certain quality of POI.

There have been instances of "sponsored POI" in the past that avoided that process but these were usually part of big partnerships (examples of these are "AXA", "SOFTBANK", "CIRCLE-K", "MUFG", which as part of their sponsorship had an item in ingress named after them and all their outlets turned into POI)

To submit new POI, you have to be Ingress Level 10+ OR PokemonGo Level 40.

To join the POI curation program, you need to be Ingress Level 12+.

It is 2021 and I live in a city. But there is no inn or greenhouse in a radius of 25km around me. I have search all the way around my city. And if you notice, i live in a big city :)
