Static Events

I would like to introduce the concept of ‘Static Events’ for consideration. A static event is an event that can be taken on by anyone, at most anytime. Whether you play solo or with friends, a static event is generally available at any time and can be taken on at ones own leisure. Static events do not expire.

Before I came to the concept, I was challenged by the possibilities of creating events for the game. In fact, this has been something I have considered on and off since my days with Pokemon Go. There are a few factors that needed to be considered which made it all the more challenging, namely weather and accessibility. For my own reasons, it’s become important for me to come up with solutions that can improve game play for most everyone.

Weather

I’m a nature buff and I love to walk and explore. Summer time here in Canada can be quite perfect but generally our summers are short lived. By the time it’s warm enough to take a dip in the lake it's late June, if we’re lucky and once late August rolls around summer is starting to give way to cooler temperatures; especially at dawn and dusk. We’ll get a few spurts of nice summer days come September and October but generally, winter is our thing here in Canada. For a geo-location gamer such as myself, what I’m able to do comfortably in the summer, rarely carries over into winter. And for obvious reasons; like it’s just too cold most days.

Accessibility

This one is also important to me. Mostly because my wife has mobility issues and I want her, and others to get the most out of their experiences. Being able to provide a solution for my wife and friends around the world brings me no end of joy. As an example, I have posted my first of many static events here in the city of Toronto, Ontario. My hope is that this example will encourage my fellow wizards to consider creating static events of their own, in their own cities.

Benefits

There are several benefits to creating static events. One of the best is access to points of interest. Toronto is a beautiful city with many points of interest and it’s my desire to promote many of these areas and locations which just happen to be rich with Inns, Greenhouses and Fortresses. Some of these events can be undertaken in an hour, others in an afternoon. Promoting points of interest and laying out a game plan for exploring and getting to know our city isn’t just beneficial for local players, but also for those who come to visit from places close and far. When visiting Chicago for PokeGo Fanfest the last few years, I would have loved to have had access to a local static event that would encourage exploration and gameplay in a safe and enjoyable way, and all the while getting to know the city I am visiting.

The static event linked above is a solution I have devised for helping my wife get around to as many Inns, Greenhouses and Fortresses as possible without too much demand on her physically. It’s also a solution for us when the weather starts to get nasty and we want a comfortable, safe way to keep gaming through the winter months until summer comes again. I engaged this event the other day when it was pouring rain and smiled the entire time as I swiped at Inns and Greenhouses as fast as my fingers could manage, but not before beginning and ending my trip with a Fortress battle or two.

I encourage our moderators to consider the concept of static events. Perhaps we can distinguish the difference between events on the map by using a different colour for the pins.

I LOVE this idea!! I bet something similar can be done for Portland (my hometown), but since I'm not there to test it out, someone else will have to do it. Or maybe I can do it at Thanksgiving! As most know, it rains a lot in the PNW, so using the public transportation would be a great way to get around the weather and still play. I'll have to investigate!
