Is the Sorting Hat meant to be an energy killer?
I just started Brilliant Event: back to Hogwarts part two and so far collected 7 sorting hats of the twelve (so good on schedule, i reckon), but all of these sorting hats costs an incredible amount of energy to collect. Is this a coincidence, or does niantic deliberately made the brilliant sorting hat difficult (would explain the special offer of 4 silver keys and 50 spell energy)
Does anyone else also have to spend far more energy on the sorting hats, then on other confoundables? Or di I just had bad luck?

They count as high foundables. So they're a little harder to collect than the hogwarts school ones (medium). Great casts may make a difference though! Good luck @ZaansGroen. :)
@ZaansGroen , your wizard's level influences a lot! Actually, I am level 30 and its consuming only 2/3 energy (with masterful casts).
Brilliant Events typically make the Brilliant Foundables a little more difficult to obtain. Since you get 5 scrolls for leveling up brilliant event rank (as opposed to 4 for family groups) and they capped the brilliant family XP at 40 for this event, it’s a great way to load up on scrolls and obtain other rewards for the event quest pages.
I typically strategize for Brilliant Events by brewing a lot of plain old exstimulo potion and I was able to get most of my sorting hats on the first or second cast with this strategy. I hesitated to use more potion and ended up having to waste 4 SE on one of the last ones, so for me it’s really valuable to have since they don’t take long to make and don’t expend a lot of rare ingredients.
The "Brilliant Sorting Hat" has the same difficulty setting as the Brilliant Unicorn, the Brilliant Golden Snitch and Brilliant Quidditch Captain Harry:
a "base chance" of 10% (modified by your level, your potion and your "casting skill")
For a Player of level 30 for example, that chance goes up to 18% (for the worst of the worst of "fair" spells without any potions)
For a Player of level 20 with Potent Exstimulo Potion however, that "base chance" is 65,9%.
... it's all a question of math and RNG 😘
It's true harder to return foundables get a lot easier as you level up. The Flora and Fauna event (This always reminds me of the Addams Family) was a nightmare with both Brilliant Unicorns and Buckbeaks. Mixing low and high level threats on the map is a great way to go. Keep at it @ZaansGroen; everyone suffers in the early stages. @Herm10neG92 Good idea with the reg. exstimulos for brilliant encounters on the map. Though most don't give me too much trouble anymore, there is always ONE who has to show me who's boss, and maybe a nip just might take the edge off in those situations. Otherwise, I try and avoid consuming potions while roaming the map and save them for the fortress.
Not really
Your level will make it easier the higher you are
If your lower level then yes you will sink energy into it even if you use a potion
I am level 26 and only use a couple of energy for each
I share @Herm10neG92's strategy. I used to be frugal with my potions, but that won't get you very far. They exist for a reason, which is to make both higher level fortress challenges and difficult encounters on the map a whole lot easier. In fact, I'll often use basic exstimulo on the more elusive medium or low level threats. Some might insist that's a waste but I disagree, and so do all my gold frames.
When it comes to Brilliants, it depends on where I'm at when I go after them. If I'm at one of my favorite spots with plenty of Inns, I'll go ahead and blow up to 5 or 6 points of spell energy going after each one if that's what it takes, though most only require between one and three. When I'm chillin' at home, it's another story. I have a couple green inns less than a quarter mile down the road from me, but when I'm curled up on the couch in my pajamas those inns might as well be on another continent. To conserve spell energy, I'll pop some bottles and make it rain. 🌧️
On a side note, has anyone noticed there's a middle-finger emoji available in the desktop version of the post/comment editor? I would think that using it would be in violation of community policy, but I mean... it's there... so... yeah.
I use potion on them if couldn't hit it after 2tries. Extimulo potion can do the trick. Now i had completed it. All of it
Yes, I did, lots of energy and potions and still it runs on me.
@ZaansGroen I'm done catching the hat. It seems like a total waste of energy, of which I'm always in dire need for. This game currently prioritizes the simple formula (energy = time). I have to dedicate time to collect energy because, right now, it's not as abundant as it should be. I'm averaging about 7 spell energy per hat. That is WAY higher than my averages for the other 4 foundables from last weeks event. The valuation for the sorting hat to return 5 family xp is therefore 0.71 (7 energy to 5 xp). Where as, I'm closer to 3.5 average for the school kids and they each return 4xp. So that valuation is at 1.25 (3.5 energy to 4xp).
It looks pretty close on paper, but the swings on the sorting hat are way higher too, emotionally tilting people really hard. When I'm regularly at 12,15 and one time 17 energy before it gets caught. Then I just can't justify catching anymore, even if I catch the next one in 1 try. On a really bad streak I could catch 2 school kids for 15 energy (8xp) to 1 sorting hat (5xp).
Most people are justifying that it's harder to catch for some reason. The dev's never said anywhere that I've seen that they intentionally want people to pour energy into these events (but it sure seems that way). But in reality they were taking feedback from the first 2 brilliant events and dialed back the difficulty. So they don't know what they're doing either, just experimenting to see what the best fit is. I vote that the first stage of this brilliant event (the 4 school kids) was exactly the right balance of energy output to family xp gain.
@Lucoire yes it's true that those are the stats compared to previous events. However, the draw shape for the hat is much more difficult to get greats/masterfuls on. I'd wager most people play the game while they are moving (I almost always play while I'm walking the dog), and this shape in particular is much harder to accurately draw while moving, most of the time one handed. The unicorn was a piece of cake to get masterfuls on.
@Herm10neG92 I play way more than most people I'm sure, but there is no way that I'm spending a potion for every catch. I probably catch close to 40-50 of these brilliant things a day during the events.
Man... Finally got all the sorting hats, but having a ton of low threat foundables departing. Ugh.
@Bredonkulous Oh I don’t use the potions on them anymore after I’ve placed the sticker. That’s a good point to add. That strategy isn’t sustainable for long term application during the whole week of the event if you are returning that many Brilliant Foundables. I’m more of an completionist myself, so once I complete all the event tasks, I tend to shift my focus back to prestigable pages. The scrolls are nice to get from Brilliant Events and I’m sure you are racking up with that strategy. But this is just the way I like to play.
I brew plenty of exstimulo and I generally reserve the regular exstimulo potions for Foundables I’m trying to place a sticker on or to use initially in those Brilliant Events. I’m much lazier about it after I complete the brilliant events and tend to save those potions for the rarely appearing prestigable Foundables.
Thanx all for explaining this to me. Thing is, I am level 27 at the moment, and the game tells me every 5 levels that gathering confoundables will be easier, but it just does not feel that way. especially with the sorting hat! And i am becoming more and more fed up with the game, as it seems that the **** steps in. Lately, I get more and more confoundables that flee after taking a potion; more and more confoudables that are "uncatchable" (take a lot of energy to catch); and more and more confoundables that do not contribute to an image (My worst count yet is 30 catches without any addition to a registry). Also, I never get a "masterfull" anymore (only got a few on low level), only some "great" if lucky (less then 30%)..
Don't get me wrong, I still like the game, but it seems that everything is becoming much harder and more ****. And i do not mind the grind, but if it is more of everything (more energy, less usefull confoundables and less results on casts) ...
But i understand now that 5 level increase only gives 5% better results and Sorting hat was High (12x! and still no clue how to see if a confoudable is high) , so much more difficult. So that explains a lot.
thanx again
