Trace Charm Clarification

Hi everyone,
Our team has been investigating errors in the SOS training skill tree. Thank you all for your bug reports. We found a number of incorrect stats and descriptions on the Trace Charm screen. Here are the corrections to the Trace Charm information screen and the maximum bonuses it will grant once you have completed all Trace Charm related nodes.
This correction will be reflected in-app in a future update. This is what the Trace Charm page will look like:
To clarify the above, there will be no changes to the SOS Training mechanics or node bonuses. There will only be changes to the text to reflect the intended benefits.
We appreciate your understanding and will be putting together a special pack in Diagon Alley to make up for the confusion. We love seeing you all progress on your SOS Skill Trees, this package will give you all a boost. Also, thank you again for your patience during the August Wizarding Weekend; we added in a couple items as a token of our appreciation.
The pack will go live next week and will include:
- 75 Field Guides
- 20 Ministry Manuals
- 2 DADA Books
- 10 Gold Coins
- 3 Level 3 Wonders of the Wizarding World Runestones
Thank you!

So, we will only ever get 2 fragments for increasing proficiency? Is this correct?
So what’s the point of having 3 SOS training nodes to increase the number of fragments returned? I specifically spent to get to those to increase the fragments returned to be 2 extra (then 3 extra) And now no matter what it can only be a maximum of 1 extra???
Thank you for clarifying...
Niantic/WB is telling people to forgive them yet again because of their lack of communication, math and/or programming skills. People used green books that can not be recovered because they are incapable of doing their job..
I'm far more interested in when the code for Trace Charms will be corrected.
So far ~70% of the time, after completing the first bonus / revealed trace, the rest of them disappear.
So what does proficiency do then?
What does Maximum Stored Spellcasts mean?
I’m confused - does this mean the max fragments from the proficiency upgrades is 1?? So we’ve wasted books doing those upgrades??
Let me share WB's logic on this.
1) Advertise a feature, and tell everyone that its functional
2) People try the feature and it causes permanent and irreparable damage to their account
3) It takes WB time to relay the numerous complaints to their developers.
4) WB offers a "gift" in game that isn't close to commensurate for the inconvenience they have caused.
Even if it is likely to upset those already feeling cheated..
What about the actual 'bonus' traces being generated, any clarification on these too?
For example when charming 1 McGonagall that should reveal 4 new traces (in this example Fluffy), actually in most cases you will end encountering 2 McG's + 5 Fluffies....
Working as intended or change/adjustment upcoming?
I would like my restricted section books back please. You sold me one thing, then changed your mind. That’s simply unethical.
Why would I spend RSB to get XP when I’m already Level 60? I would not. Please return my books.
Thanks for the explanation Lola
If current behavior is correct, then "Rare trace bonuses" still has confusing and misleading text.
Why does it say "Number of higher traces provided"? If i get 7 additional traces - either all of them are higher or none. It is not a number of traces, it is "Yes or No"
Are you saying that upgrading proficiency will provide more XP (family and wizarding) and never more than 2 fragments per trace? If that’s so, I am very upset. That’s false advertising. There were opportunity costs associated with upgrading trace charm proficiency early. Now it appears you are refusing to fix your mistake and rebranding instead. Offering a meager gift to everyone doesn’t really help when not everyone has been equally affected by this.
@hpwulola @FoxTrotRider 's comment should be addressed..
"I would like my restricted section books back please. You sold me one thing, then changed your mind. That’s unethical."
VERY TRUE. Had it not taken devs a month to address the issue, it wouldn't have wasted resources of players.
@hpwulola I’m not usually one to complain, but I must say I’m really disappointed with this. What about the RSB investment?
I worked so hard the past two days to knock out this Brilliant Event, used all of my Tonics for Trace Detection to get it done, and then very excitedly used 18 restricted section books to complete “Piece of the Puzzle,” which CLEARLY says it will increase the number of fragments returned when using the trace charm +1 to now be +3.
I spent time debating between this SOS training and another and decided this was the most beneficial. After completing it, I used the trace charm and saw that it didn’t work. I came to see if it’s a known bug and I found this. This is incredibly disappointing. I would feel much better if this apology came with returning my green books that are so difficult to come by.
I love this game and I play every day, but quality control is seeming more and more cumbersome. :(
Any fix for bug on "wall" node and life time of traces from Charm?
This is very pathetic. It's not a clarification, it's extra confusion and disappointment. What a waste!
@hpwulola thank you for the clarification. However, it comes too late for many players. Many spent RSBs on trace charm proficiency, that had they known this, they wouldn't have done so. The Field Guides and Ministry Manuals in the store pack don't come close to the value of those RSBs. Please consider adding RSBs to the store pack.
So essentially there was no point in investing even 1 FG or manual into a proficiency node. We got one at level 25 that gave the extra fragment. I confirmed this when my son hit 25 and hasn’t unlocked any other proficiency nodes, but now gets 2 fragments when he returns a trace charm. This “gift” is not going to make up for this. We can earn that many guides/manuals easily, and 2 DADA books don’t make up for the RSBs spent.
The text in each proficiency node wasn’t vague, and was not misinterpreted, it was very clear. Just as efficacy says we’ll see more traces, the proficiency nodes each say we’ll return more fragments. If you are changing it now the meager “gift” doesn’t even come close to replacing what so many of your most loyal players invested. Do better.
Hi. This is quite confusing. So what do proficiency nodes actually do? For example - "Piece of the Puzzle" and "Foretelling Foundables" and "Deep Dive" - they say "increasing the number of Fragments you can recover from those Traces". I upgraded these because I assumed this meant instead of getting one fragment for each foundable, I would get 4 (after the upgrades) And "Gethsemane's Pickle" which I have held off updating says +3 fragments - so should take me to 7 fragments for each foundable. What does upgrading these nodes actually do?
@ProfessorTonks it seems they actually only increase XP from the traces.
And now we have people flagging posts again that don't actually warrant flagging...
I think it's a bit cheap of them to have advertised proficiency increasing fragments, then when people complained about it being capped at +1 extra fragment they didn't say anything, leading people to believe it was a bugged cap and that it should be +1 fragment per proficiency node - now after people have spent time-gated RSB on proficiency nodes you go back on what was originally stated making it just increasing fragments by 1 max and just making it give a little fxp and wxp bonus?!
HPWULOLA - This error on developer’s part should be corrected to work the way it was originally worded. As seen by all the prior comments, most of us don’t want apologies and gift packs, we want this corrected. Please talk to the higher ups and have them do the right thing and fix this to work the way it was originally presented or refund our restricted section books. Thank you.
I have to agree with my fellow players in the comments. I would not have spent my Restricted Books if it was known that you could change what the SOS nodes do without warning. It was clearly stated that you would get more fragment and now you just change after the fact. WHy would any high level player spend green books on these when they provide no benefit? I would like by Restricted Section Books returned to my account.
Sad! I am very disappointed with this solution that you found to fix your mistake.
Tbh, I never understood how any of this worked. The terminology never made sense, and I figured that as I played I’d begin to understand. I don’t feel so bad now. I suggest that someone at Niantic write a manual explaining everything once they get it straight.
I agree with the other comments. I would not have spent restricted books on trace charm proficiency if it only gave extra XP! Can you remove those lessons and return my restricted books? After all, they were only spent due to your FALSE advertising of what Proficiency would provide. Bait and switch is a good description of what you have done!
