I'm an Auror too. You shouldn't use your Bat-Bogey hex before Your first strike. If you use that, the Stamina of foe will be lower than 100% and that'll not count and First Strike will be useless.
I see what you're saying but I don't see myself exiting battle to place Bat-Bogey for a 3 stamina drop, then going back in. 3 stamina isn't much. It's a pretty useless hex.
@ColonPlow All Aurors have their first perk that says "+10 power(damage) to foes that have less than 50% stamina"
so sometimes I use Bat-Bogey when I need their Stamine go from 50-53% to 49%. after that I will do my spell and I'll do a 83 damage instead of 73. sometimes this will help me not to use more spell energies.
sometimes I use Bat-Bogey when I need to finish foes and don't need any more focus. It doesn't count a **** and it doesn't give me focuess, but it saves energy spells.
and sometimes I have much time, I will use Bat-Bogey to complete "use 1000 Sterategic Spells in Wizarding challenges or Oddities" achievement. I spam that hex something like more than 30-40 times(90-120 stamina) and the foe will be under 50% stamina. then I finish him with more powerfull stamina. It's useful for lower level chambers.
Bat-Bogey is a good spell if you are doing fortresses with a group and you finished your foes you can chip away at your friend's foes every 5 seconds without using focus. One hex isn't going to do much but spamming one every 5 seconds starts to adds up.
Bat bogey is also a useful initial hex to put on a foe being engaged by a professor - as it gives him/her a +5 power boost even without any other hexes or potions.

SO, IT'S NOT USELESS!
Either way Bat Bogey Hex is not all that useful and is bet used to assist when a foe is already engaged.
Btw I got my 3000 strategic spell casts = 15 red books yesterday. Awsome prize!
