unsuccessful traces

is there rhyme or reason to why a trace is successful or not? I have cast quite a few masterful spells in a row and had the magic resist then cast a fair or good spell and returned the foundable. I can come across a "medium" threat foundable and return it on the first try and then come across a low threat, use a potion and it will still take me several tries after the potion. Any suggestions, tips or tricks are much appreciated!

    i havent seen any pattern to it so far but one thing that seems to happen is if you have two or more "great" or higher traces in a row that helps. the potions have been hit or miss for me as well, not sure there is a reason to use them unless its a severe or emergency foundable.

    I have noticed that’s certain times of day and certain weather will actually affect how many times you have to cast a spell or whether or not a confoundable will depart. Usually at dusk I have noticed more of them depart on me

    From what I have been able to tell, while there is a general trend towards better casts & stronger potions having greater success, there is no actual guarantee. However, I do not find it unlike the capture mechanics in PoGo. Like a Mon, the Confoundable never has a 0% chance of departing or resisting.

    Ive found that if ever i get a severe or emergency threat- got Dumbledore yesterday wss sooo excited! I throw potent exstimulo, dawdle etc at it- but they have always departed! Even if i get a great cast - maybe its cos im only level 19 yet & so the game doesn't let you catch them til higher?

    But ive found the same wacky randomness to traces & just pray i get it first time & swear when a low threat uses 4 of my energy and ive done 4 great casts in a row lol!

    Ive not been able to do a masterful cast yet- clearly im just a bit rubbish! Lol 😂

    @mDandelion Thank you for the question. Here's my take on it.

    We know that the cast 'slider' at the top can have more than one colour showing. From green on the right to deep orange on the left. I believe it works like this;

    Let's say you have one solid colour (Let's say green) that stretches from the very right of the slider (Masterful zone) into the 'Fair' zone before it changes to another colour, say lighter green or yellow. It is my opinion that the 'strength' or 'effectiveness' of the cast is the same so long as the slider remains anywhere within the same solid colour. In this case, the only difference between a Good, Great or Masterful cast will be the amount of XP awarded based on quality of the cast. The effectiveness of the cast itself remains uniform throughout any given solid colour.

    In my case I have learned that I am too old to color between the lines. I rarely get a great and have never gotten a masterful.

    I've been recording my success rates. Between lvls 10 and 15 with low threat I had 73% success with fair, 75% with good, 78% with great and only 43% with masterful. Go figure.

    It's been a few years since I was in school but pretty sure I remember 43 being less than 73... Can someone confirm this for me?

    @Whitehorsematt Thank you for taking the time to put those stats together and congrats on getting 15!

    thank you guys for all the feedback! I am still getting frustrated especially when I cast several masterful traces in a row before the foundable departs! Even more mad when its on a foundable that i already have maxed out on so I am just catching them for the xp points and so that they will go away. If you guys find a solution or way around this problem please share!!

    @CytopeAchen i think that was his point.. higher success rate with only fair vs. masterful

    @mDandelion Lol I'm aware, I was only joking. His numbers seem to match my personal experiences. I frequently do 2-3 Masterful only to have a Good win it, even Fair sometimes. Aside from the xp bump the Masterful cast doesn't seem as appealing as I initially thought it would be. Of course we haven't even reached month 1 of post beta gameplay, can't expect all the fine points to be spot on yet.

    @CytopeAchen lol my bad I didn't pick up on the sarcasm, but i'm glad i'm not the only one to be noticing this so maybe in time they will make improvements to it!

    The cast is derived from Ingress glyphing, and is some algorithm of accuracy and speed. I noticed that completing the cast faster but with somewhat incrementally less accuracy moved some of the casts from good to great . Pushing down too hard on the screen also slows the cast.
