Did the new SOS ranking mess up Challenges

My wife and I are at the top of our professions, and have beat Dark Chamber 5 multiple times. We just tried to beat it (not via Knight But, but physical location) and lost... by seconds... after a couple dozen potions between us! It seemed like none of our potions, stamina, or shields were worth anything. We're both level 40 and according to the SOS & profession levels we should have beat it based on the recommended levels. We have beat it before. But we are both extremely frustrated that our efforts amounted to nothing. Has anyone else had this issue?

Not level 40, but level 34. I was in dark chamber 1 or two earlier. There were three of us in there, all my level or better . I stockpiled potions for days on preparation. Top level exstimulo potions, wit potions, nothing seemed to help. I have done much better before, and it wasn't just me failing. Every time I finished a battle we had a greater number of foes waiting. We should have been able to clear it. Worst of all, I didn't even get credit for the attempt in the bonus quests. Last time we timed out we at least got credit for completion.
The introduction of the S.O.S. skill tree introduced nerfs to potion effectiveness, mastery from levels, and a few other things. They are forcing people to get S.O.S. skills, in order to return to your previous effectiveness, plus a little; once you progress far enough in the trees.
None of this was announced, but many have noticed it.
@BenTiger That is really interesting. I hadn't noticed any nerfs, just enhancements when purchasing the SOS skills.
