The chances for success / staying but not being captured / being captured are somewhat tied to your overall level (in addition to how well you trace the spell-pattern)
Essentially, you're too weak and the Trace is too difficult. I'm L22 now and pretty much nothing flees anymore (unless I move very quickly or my GPS is jumping around)
This is why this game sucks! There are so many things about this game that make me believe that the creators have no idea how to make a good game fun. We get gifts, but for some reason we are limited to 10. Not fun. We perform a masterful cast, but for some reason we fail anyway. Not fun. The value of spell energy is artificially inflated because we are severely limited on how much spell energy we are able to store. Spell energy is more valuable than the reward that we will receive when we successfully return a confoundable. Spell energy is too valuable. Spells fail too often. The reward to effort ratio is dorked. All in all, the game producers are clueless. They should find another job.

@Erubus6 I would say welcome to the forums, but...
First of all, it sounds like you want the game to be way too easy. If you always got a successful cast for every masterful, there’d be no challenge. Unlimited gifts? What’s the point? The way you’re describing the game, it would be extremely boring very quickly. You are not severely limited on the amount of spell energy you can store, as you claim. You can essentially store as much spell energy as you want - you just need to use coins to buy vault extensions. You start out with being able to hold 75 I think. For example, my energy storage is at 215 right now, and there are tons of people who are way higher than that.
The game producers are not clueless, as you say. They seem to know very well what they’re doing: don’t make the game too easy and keep the players coming back each day for more.
Perhaps you are relatively new to the game? If that’s the case, it can be frustrating at first when you’re still learning. The higher you level up, the easier things become.
(Did you read any of the comments below the initial post? They all pretty much say the same thing I just said.)
@MrSciGuy Me and a couple hundred million of my friends respectfully disagree. I have spent my life in the gaming industry and have been on the launch teams of some of the biggest and most successful games played online. I really wanted to like this game. I played to level 40 and am a level 14 auror. It is over monitized. The game client has been and continues to be buggy. Gameplay is just bad.
I think it all depends on the level of the registry page. For sure after I leveled up the brilliant pages, in the recent events, overwhelming those confoundables became much easier even for "Good" casts.
Returning foundables is not easy and it’s not hard. It’s just almost totally controlled by RNG. The effect if RNG is too high and the effect of spell quality is too low. That’s the reason why it feels so annoying. Using exponential model instead of this current moving window would make things better.
Sometimes it goes smoothly, sometimes weak foundables which should be easily 1-masterful shot by a lvl 40 take 10+ tries and then depart. It's pretty obvious to me there is some bug or some hindering mechanic which punishes several masterful casts in a row, and makes a given easy foundable resist 21 masterful casts (actual count), and then once you quit encounter and go in again you get it first try with a fair cast.
All about getting us to spend $$$ on more spell energy, potion ingredients, &/or potions to capture the elusive ones. Getting to point that with some elusive ones, the waste of spell energy, potions isn’t worth it.
My problem is, I can cast 4+ masterful and nothing happens, and then I mess up and do a poor or good and then i catch it. Or I do my first spell a great or masterful and the thing disappears. Once I was up against the dumbledor confoundable and immediately used a potent potion and did my first spell, a great and green and then it disappeared. Once I wasted almost 10 spells for a medium confoundable. You shouldn’t have to rely on potions for every encounter. Especially since some people are at level 40.
It seems to random and a waste of time. I’d rather change it to a hit point system like in the fortress. To me that makes more sense. Currently you have two systems, one is a repetitive if you’re luck and the other similar but with hit points.
Also, this event I saw 50+ hedwigs and 35+ Ginnys, hardly anything else. What gives?
this game has lost its fun, I’ve spent countless hours on this game and it’s getting more and more frustrating.
also there were times in the knight bus fortress where I used the legends runes or other runes and only getting the challenge items and not getting any other fragments. Especially the previous brilliant events or current events. The inconsistency with rewards and ways of achieving goals is ridiculous.
For the most part the lower the threat the easier and the better the cast (and level) the faster to return.
Can seem frustrating for an unsuccessful Masterful to be followed by a Fair that returns the foundable, but that's real life I suppose, trying harder doesn't always give us the results we want.
I am very happy with the gameplay and the features.

Yeah it annoys me too! But its challenging and better than being very easy! If its a valuable confoundable use a potion!
I agree that it is annoying, but the game can't be too easy or it won't be as much fun. 🙂
Get's easier with time and skills.
@LynxForSOS what potion helps with that?
You can use the dwadle draught. And you can use the the extimulo potions to strengthen your spells

@Erubus6 Several hundred million friends? Why does that number seem grossly exaggerated?
Take care then.

The god of chance (RNG) is merciless isnt it. LoL
Even barrage of masterfull cast still not guaranted to capture or even prevent flee.
The most favorable is oddities family. Even the red fume/beam is still loyal fighting us until the end.

Ps. I have never spent a penny on the game
