CASTING WITH MY THUMB

My wife is a casting Grandmaster. I'm so jealous! Casting was a challenge for me at first and I'm finally getting to hold my own with regular GREAT! casts, including the odd Masterful! cast here and there. I've noticed to my displeasure that the XP she generates per encounter is helping her catch up to me really fast. There is no doubt in my mind she's going to blow past me any day now.

I don't mind really, I need a good partner in this venture and her skillset is a boon for us, but you know, I'm a guy. And she's just dying to show me who's boss! lol Won't be long now, no doubt... The secret to a successful marriage is knowing when to yield, but I regress...

So, I'm sitting on my deck enjoying the summer weather when she comes along and notices me casting Alohomora with my thumb. She said 'What are you doing?' and I said 'What do you mean?' and she said 'Are you casting with your thumb?'

I laughed! I said, 'Ya, some spells like Ebublio, Diffindo and Flipendo I actually cast better using my thumb, what's wrong with that??' She said 'That's just wrong!'

I'm still laughing. What do you think? Anyone out there casting with their thumb?

I cast with thumb for some of them all the time.

I have to admit, i can't even begin to think about casting alohomora with my potato thing i currently call my thumb. In fact, i can't play this game one handed. Your wife is a master sorceress, but if it can help, there are some wizards out there who are way worse than you ha !

(Indeed, i cast a lot of spells masterfully with my index... at least)

I use a stylus for casting. Personally I find that I'm more accurate and consistent with it. But I'll give your thumb casting a try. It sounds interesting.

I think I do better with my thumb too; that is what I use most of the time. I'm not a super-great caster, but I've got in over 200 masterful casts so far.

I might have to try that with alohomora. I am so horrible at that spell.

As I play one-handed most of the time, I'm thumb-caster.

I cast with my index finger or my stylus pen from my Note 9. My friends say I'm cheating when i use my pen lol

some spells work better for me with a thumb, (it does circular movement fast, vs moving my whole arm) but YMMV based on thumb / screen size.

Get yourself a stylus with low friction/mesh tip. I found one for $1.50. It will change your casting experience for the better guaranteed.

I have a zero in dexterity so I use my index finger.

I use my thumb for all things phone related. I always get fair a few good and very rare great. I go for accuracy over speed. I can't imagine using my finger I would pause too long trying to figure out how to do it.

I am left-handed and am horrible at casting. I have a theory that the shapes work better for right-handed people. 😂😭😂. But, seriously, I think it has to do with “pulling” toward your palm vs “pushing” away from your hand. I’ve discovered that if I turn my phone sideways or even upside down, I cast better on some spells.

@Psychopomp I considered the exact same things being a lefty. I also attempted to turn my phone sideways but decided not to go there (didn't want to get into THAT habit lol). I suggest practicing for accuracy first though it will annoy you. Once you start getting your accuracy down you can then start picking up speed. Just like Kung ****, first work the accuracy of the technique and speed will come with practice. Also try a lighter touch on the screen, seemed to help me a lot.

It depends on the spell! For example, the Meteolojinx Recanto is an utter disaster whenever I do it with my thumb, but for most of the other ones it works best with my thumb. And then for some it doesn't really matter, I'll do equally fine with my thumb or index. :)

I actually meant Arresto Momentum, but then again, neither of them really work with my thumb 😅

I know this is an old thread - however I have been training myself recently to cast with my thumb. While I prefer a stylus - I will give you this reason to force yourself to thumb cast - walking. I can hold my phone stead with my left hand in a traditional grip. Then wrap my right hand around my left hand so that my right thumb rests easily on the screen. This gives me the stability I need to cast with my right thumb while still being able to walk around my neighborhood and at crowded places like the City/Disney World.

When casting with my Index finger I find that I must stop walking or chance running into something, tripping, etc. I just can't walk and use my index/stylus.

I’m not sure I’ve ever tried casting without my thumb. I get mostly greats and masterfuls although there are one or two spells I generally struggle to do better than good on.
