How Are the New Professions Rankings Calculated?
So, I'm cool with taking away, 13, 14, 15, etc. But it was puzzling to me that I got a ranking of over 1 million. Seemed inflationary. Then the SOS training update went live and the numbers changed again. But this time, it leaves me two rankings behind where I was before. Was there THAT much of a difference between me and other Level 15 Magizoos that I would go backwards two levels?
The answer I'm looking for is the calculation that goes into achieving that level. What gameplay criteria do I need to focus on to get back to where I was? I'm already at 142 out of 142 in Professions. Yet other Magizoos I've seen have higher rankings, and I know they can't have more than 142 out of 142.

@VoiceMaster I am curious about this too. I have three professions and the numbers change every time I switch. And I mean on the same profession. It makes it impossible to esdtimate ability in fortresses now!
I noticed the same thing, and I grabbed screenshots of the glitch (see below).
I have been playing since the beginning, and though my professions may have been lacking, I didn't think they were that bad (Auror-12, almost 13; Magizoologist-high 13; Professor-high 13, maybe low 14). However, when they tweaked the system to show the new Combat Training Appraisals, I found I was severely lacking, compared to others (something like: Auror-30268; Magizooligist-36278; Professor-33076). While I was seeing many with numbers over 60000, and others over 90000, in the Wizarding Challenges, I thought, “No biggie. I’ll work on that”.
THEN, THE NEW UPDATE ARRIVED TO INCLUDE SOS TRAINING. Unfortunately, my Combat Training Appraisals dropped once more again (Auror-26026; Magizoologist-26339 ; Professor-23917). Wait, what? I also started to notice that each of my Combat Training Appraisals would periodically show lower numbers (well below 20000!!!). Seriously now, what is going on?!?! As with most glitches, I found what seemed to be a temporary fix by switching from the current profession, to another, and then back, and the appraisal numbers would seemingly correct themselves.
NOW, FOR THE REAL KICKER... Having just checked to make sure that my numbers hadn’t dropped (yet again), I decided to join others in a Wizarding Challenge. And, to my astonishment, I found that my Combat Training Appraisals had once again dropped. FOR ALL TO SEE!!! I had to get out of there immediately!!! I had no clue if the incorrect appraisal numbers were actually lowering my Stats, thus preventing me from properly contributing to the challenge. You can see below how much lower my numbers were, what if this caused my professor to perform as if at a level 11, instead of the previous 13/14?
Upon, reviewing my Combat Training, and doing the old profession switch-a-roo, my appraisal numbers were “correct” once more. Dude! I have looked at the positive with every update,but I’m feeling a bit wronged at this point.
One last thing. And, others may find this as strange as I do... Before the update, my auror had the lowest rating, and my professor the highest (with my magizoologist hot on the professor’s heels). So why now is my professor ranking lower than my auror?
Yeah @TLeatherbridge I'm also wondering if I played at the lower combat stats if I would struggle in higher chambers. Haven't had the guts to try yet, lol.
BTW, we have also noticed the professional appraisal stats can drop again after you level up SOS skills. Switching professions does help.
There's been further discussion in the field guide here, if anyone's curious: https://community.harrypotterwizardsunite.com/en/discussion/7855/a-field-guide-to-sos-training/p2

Count me in on the confusion
at 4:30pm EST I went into a fortress for first time today and my combat level was 50, 682 regardless of what chamber or rune stone I used.
I returned to fortresses at 6pm EST and noticed my combat level dropped to 28, 157.
Talk about ‘fuzzy math’.
*and, I just again tried entering a fortress with my current puddly low score (lessons Lvl 15 Auror-137/137- before change over) and another player with a score double my current one immediately LEFT!!
Im level 40 with almost 2,500 fortress challenges completed, and I have successfully SOLO’d Dark V
so @HPWUTeam2020 HOW CAN I BE DEMOTED???
@WitchHiker - try switching professions and switching back.
@FireWanderer I never had a desire to switch professions from an Auror. I was waiting for the promised ‘more lessons to come’ as in:
more Auror lessons and just saved all the scrolls, red books and RSB. I had a pile.
@WitchHiker no I meant, switch to professor and then immediately switch back. There seems to be a thing where it resets your appraisal to the right value upon return. You don't lose any earned scrolls or books doing this.
@FireWanderer So if I’m only an Auror, just hitting the Professor or MZ tab (not going any further to actually become either of these) is enough to reset?
@WitchHiker No, hit the Prof/MZ tab, click the "Switch Profession" button, and then hit the Auror tab and hit "Switch Profession" again. See if that sets your Auror value appropriately.
@WitchHiker you need to go on one of the other profession tabs and click switch. If you’ve never done it before you might get a dialogue box or two to click through, but that’s about it. No need to put scrolls or books into those lessons, just go back to your original profession tab and click switch again. That should reset the score. You don’t lose any progress or any scrolls or books by switching professions (I haven’t heard of any bugs like that - not yet anyway).
@FireWanderer WOW-yes that did it!
Thank you, I owe you one.
"My job here is done."
@WitchHiker glad I could help. Should you ever think of dipping your toe in the professor waters, I can give some pointers. 😁
Sooo I have two maxed out professions and one close and switching between them only fixes the issue for a temporary time. As soon as you go back in your numbers are all over the place again.
@GretnaVanFleet yes, there is still a bug with the calculation. The devs are aware and apparently investigating.
Edited to remove piece about only seeing it on restart
@FireWanderer well maybe not.
Now it won’t let me switch back to Auror.
im stuck on MZ showing only 420 points instead of Auror with 50,687 points
@WitchHiker Okay, now THAT is a bug. What happens if you go from MZ -> Prof -> Auror?
My numbers are all over the place. Initially after the change, it was 999,000+, the reduced to 28,000+, then yesterday, I downloaded assets and it changed again to 50,000+, but when I logged in this morning, I’m back to 28,157. All of this before my game froze while I was in the Hogwarts fortress and now I can’t log in at all.
