You can do this, it’s just currently a pain in the ****. I fortress with a group via the Knight Bus all the time. But yes, they need a feature where you can invite and set it up easily. That part we all want.
The flip side is that it would make this event (win your highest chamber), that much harder for people who don't have in-game friends. People with friends would stop playing with strangers.
I personally have a group of friends to play with but it hadn't stopped me from doing half or more of my fortress sessions with randoms. It's a hassle to find friends in the fortress right now, but if we're available at the same time then we will go to the trouble of finding each other. Having the ability to easily find friends would just mean that when we have a group available we can get started much more easily. I would still battle with strangers when none of my friends are available.
I must admit I play more with strangers than with my friends even for this last event task. It took a few tries to find a group cohesive enough to win, but hopefully my fellow players and I all learned to balance each other out and learned a few new strategies.
