Runestone level determines on the one hand the level of enemies on the other hand affects the number of prestige points in the challenge registry. for example, when passing the 8th level dungeon in a team of five people, a person with a first-level stone will receive ~ 120 prestige, a person with a 5th-level stone will receive ~ 240
Runestone type gives u a chance for additional loot - 10*Family exp of that type & one fragment. Some high lvl wizards say that higher stones give rare pictures, but this is not exactly.
Chamber levels determine strength of challenge. Runestones slightly modify strength of challenge and level of reward. Color of Runestone determines which of the 10 areas in the Registry (Exploration) your reward will reflect.

I think they give you the chance to find foundables from whichever registry they are from... That's my best guess.

Is there any correlation between Runestone level and the Fortress level? Should I use higher Runestone level for higher Fortress level?
