protego during challenges

ive been getting really frustrated with the protego function during battles as it never really seemed to stop me getting damage (in the higher chambers this was causing a major issue and losing me alot of potions and spell energy), ive googled whether theres a trick to it and couldnt find anything other than suggestions about timings etc but nothing really very helpful so ive been trying some stuff out to see if it helps. today i found that if after swiping the direction arrow i kept my finger pressed to the screen the protego continues to be cast while the attack occurs (as long as my finger stays on the screen) whereas it used to fade away. the damage also seems to be less than i was getting before as well but this could be a fluke. i am not saying this works but seems to be helping me. has anyone else found this to work or any other ways to get the protego to work better? (i have mastered all the protego sessions in the auror lessons so i cant improve it based on that).

To the best of my knowledge there is no technique during the battle to change the effectiveness of your protego spell. It's just a yes/no question: was protego cast property during the correct time frame? If yes, then it mitigates some (but definitely not all) of the incoming damage. If you're an auror with your protego skills maxed then you get a 35% damage reduction from your spell.
