Profession - Stackable skills?

Before I start spending my hard-won green books...
Some skills seem to have the same effect. Is it better to acquire the higher skill and not bother with the lower-level one? Or will both skills stack?
Example: as a Professor, I can grab Improved Deterioration Hex (line 4) so that Impair Foe Stamina goes from -5 to -10. But line 8 in the tree has Deterioration Hex Maxima, also described as getting Impair Foe Stamina from -5 to -10. If I take both, will they stack (for a total of -15 or -20 for instance), or is this a waste of books and I should just grab one of the two?

They seem to be stackable. I choose the upgrade with the most effect per scroll / book. So far, that has always been the cheapest upgrade version.

Yep, just to confirm, they definitely stack. I think the -Stamina hex stacks up to 8 times. I have The Deterioration hex (1/1), Improved Deterioration Hex (2/2), and Deterioration Hex Maxima (1/3). That gives me 4 levels, so they lose 20 stamina every time they cast or defend. So far two foes who were low on stamina have taken themselves out when I cast protego against them - it's a good feeling!
There's also Deterioration Hex Mastery. I'm currently at (1/2) - for a total of 35 and will be at (2/2) for a total of 40 once I finish up the current brilliant event. It's a seriously powerful hex, I'm not regretting spending my dark books here first.
Since the stackable question has been addressed the only thing I have to add is the recommendation to unlock the lvl 1 on the next before finishing out the current. This allows you to unlock the tree further so you don't end up with 100 books and scrolls only to have to wait for a restricted book to advance.
