Fortressing etiquette for remote group play
So first off, a huge thanks for the remote fortress play... A massive game changer. But at the moment it feels like the wild west in there, so I would like to offer a guide to help those who only ever solo or rarely group play.
NOTE: This won't cover EVERYTHING.
Read left to right and top to bottom.
Thanks to @Bliznik for posting these. I ask that others that group play regularly also chime in on this...

Thank you. So, sorry, to clarify (I'm a professor) - should I be prioritising protection over proficiency even if I have enough focus for proficiency? And are the little icons the order I should be protecting people (e.g. an auror, then a magizooligist, then an auror, then a couple of professors, etc.)?
Awesome post @Bormacska, just what we needed!
(I'm moving this discussion to The Knight Bus section)
@Firenightingale that's my understanding... I'm not a professor, but my read is to throw protection charms on your magizoologist and aurors first...
Professors? @Owlx? @ZookiTabooki?
If you have an Auror in your party: defence them first (protection charm), that's fastest. And your Aurors can be glass cannons. Then add the proficiency I'd say. Dissenting opinions most welcome! @FireNightingale @Bormacska et al. So yes! That sounds exactly right. :)
I think bravery from magizoo need max focus (12) because bravery need 7 focus, magizoo it self need 5 focus for the passive skill (+40 power) CAN NOT afford to be lower than 5 focus.
What i still dont know is, is it cast once per player or once to all?
Time is ticking so couldnt thinking much. LOL
@Andolov has written a lovely reddit article as well for the shields vs proficiency argument here:
@Kodokmag yep, a Magizoologist needs 5+ focus for beast mode to be active. The ‘bravery charm’ costs 7 focus and applies to everyone and therefore only needs to be cast once.
Just a thought I wanted to share to those who haven’t played with Magizoologists before - If you find that a Magizoologist isn’t casting the ‘bravery charm’ with an Elite foe around, it may mean that they don’t have enough focus. Or if they have cast it, but aren’t engaging with any foes than it usually means that their focus is now below 5, so they are waiting for it to get back to 5. The max focus a Magizoologist can start with is 5, and the max they can fill up to is 12, which means (if they have the relevant skills unlocked) they need full focus to cast the bravery charm without risking losing beast mode.
As groups are usually random, if you’re in a group battle (assuming at least one Magizoologist and one auror are present) Aurors who find a Magizoologists not engaging with foes or casting the bravery charm, when it would help, may want to send some focus to them. Or if no aurors are present, then just be a bit patient for that bravery charm. Please note: this thought I have shared assumes that the Magizoologist you are playing with has unlocked the bravery charm on their profession skill tree; it is possible that they may not have.
I am *loving* this. You post: players listen. Smoooooth sailing! 💖👏🙌👍
Edited: @Bormacska that thread is *exactly* the ticket!
@Imaginatio your thread may resurface... maybe. ;)
My comment disappeared, probably due to too much editing... unfortunately, I can’t help continuously rereading my comments and trying correct myself 🤦♀️😂
It’ll be back...
Soon...
I think...
Maybe...
Hopefully... 🤷♀️😂
@Imaginatio it’s gone to the room of requirement
@MrSciGuy that may be the case... however, it does make you wonder how a forum post may have found its way there... 🧐🤔
@Imaginatio
Make a comment draft with word processor before hand? 😬
Then copy paste it here.
Rescued your post from the spam filter @Imaginatio!
I manage them periodically while I'm active but, if it's taking too long, feel free to ping me!✌️
@Kodokmag Good suggestion, however I usually post comments from my phone and I find it easier to post straight onto the website. Also, knowing what I’m like, even if I did write it elsewhere, check beforehand and then post, I’d probably still find things I want to change/correct after posting it here 🤦♀️😂
I usually do read (and re-read... many times) before posting a comment, but I miss things or want to change things more often in my slightly longer posts.
Thank you for the clarification & the links, it makes more sense now. :o)
Woohoo! @HPWUblue to the rescue! 😃 Thank you! 😊
@Punkyfins It’s back... 👀😂😃
Third article for review if images and math aren't your thing. This is written by @javatigris.
I had a battle in the highest chamber. We were five when we went in. One by one, the other four dropped out until I was the only one left with 7 high level foes and 2 minutes left on the timer. I’d already used a lot of spell energy and several potions, but I had to drop out and forfeit my runestone, as I would have just ended up wasting more energy and potions with no real chance of beating the chamber. Very not cool.
I somewhat disagree on some points:
Focus on SPEED
The most important thing to optimize for in Fortress-Battles is Speed. The quicker you get your reward, the better. To get there, there's a couple of things to get out:
Priority 1: Proficiency Charm
THIS REQUIRES TEAM EFFORT.Professors - if fully skilled - start with 4 Focus.
Casting it requires 7 Focus.
ERGO: Aurors should give Focus to Professors until the Proficiency Charm is cast // Magizoologists should fight Enemies until the required Focus is aquired.(Advice for Aurors: give Focus to the left-most Professor in the Group-List to avoid wasting focus)
Priority 2: Confusion-Hex / Protection Charm / Bravery Charm
Once the Proficiency Charm is up, each Profession can focus on their own tasks.
(Aurors only) Confusion Hex, Weakening Hex
Cast CONFUSION HEX on enemies with extremely powerful defence-mechanisms:
Less defence/dodge -> quicker fightCast Weakening Hex on Enemies with lots of POWER:
(Magizoologists only) Bravery Charm
More Power => Quicker Fight(Professors only) Protection Charm / Deterioration Hex
Cast Protection charm on fragile Team-Members
More defence -> less time spent healing -> more time fighting -> quicker fightCast Deterioration Hex on High-Stamina Enemies:
Thanks @Lucoire :)
Incidentally (and i've been running into this) any input on how to strategise depending on group composition? So if you have no healer or tank for example. Keep to the rules above? I've had battles with me and four Aurors. Boost 'em all first, and save your hp as a kind of mini tank? Or hex and wade in...
@Punkyfins Hm. Personally I've been avoiding Groups where one of the 3 Professions is missing and for DARK (and probably FOREST, too) I'd recommend doing the same.
Aside from that, I don't see why the strategy should change. The steps are ordered by magnitude of effect... but maybe I'm missing something.
THAT BEING SAID, the aforementioned strategy assumes that all present players have max'ed the group-buffs... if that's not the case, then you're already scrambling before the fight even began. But let's look at it from a logic perspective:
For maximum Potential:
So both Aurors and Magizoologists are "relatively" independant in terms of passive strength.
Professors however somewhat depend on teamwork: they can cast 2 buffs themselves but only 1 debuff. So the only issue arrises for PROFESSORS if there is no AUROR to provide 2 additional debuffs.
@Bormacska because it didn't see your post 1st
Great point @Lucoire . As I am normally a solo player, I tend to have my potion on, as an enhancement. Which gives me two if I have my defence as well... Usually teams muddle through regardless :)
try this and he will be posting more for team strategy on monday
Darn, I thought I was having fun. Didn't realize I was being judged and hated for not knowing all the intricacies. After reading all this, I am certainly not excited to play with a group again. :(
@Shearah
wecolme to the forum so very sorry that this was your first experience.
We never wanted or meant to make anyone feel like they were hated or judged. Please except my heartfelt apologies.
The intent for this post was to help players new to team playing could understand its mechanics.
It is very exciting to group fortress. Player who regularly group play had the fortunes of having someone to help us in person.
Well that's not possible now. I can only imagine how confusing it is for players who are new teams.
Hope you keep playing groups. And i really hope to see you in a Fortress soon.
If you have any questions or need help please ask.
So this is a challenge I keep running into: full professor chamber like so:
... that's difficult in itself: because no balance. Then 2 bail and we end up like so:
If bailing costs you your runestone: why do people leave players in the lurch like this when we can still win?
How do I cope with "full-house" professor challenge? (Any thoughts / help welcome).
Are professors just seriously over represented in your experience and do I need to switch to Auror or magi...
*Important caveat! This challenge is just an example. Nothing against the specific users shown in the pictures above!* This just happens *so unbelievably often* that I thought I'd put it to the people here.
