One thing that may help is to only attempt traces that use your favorite spell. For example, I'm particularly good at casting meteolojinx recanto, so to do that task I only did traces with that spell and fled from the rest. It was a bit of a pain and it still took me a few tries, but that made it much easier for me to complete.
