Lost Runestone when friend clicked "join"

My husband and I started a Forest 5 Wizarding Challenge and put in level 4 Ministry runestones. I was in the chamber and his join command didn't work, resulting in both of us losing the stones. This is the second time we have lost our stones because of the glitch.
