Traces only spawn by roads

For a game that wants to encourage walking/biking, you'd expect traces to show up on hiking trails, bike trails, off the main roads, etc.

Instead, traces only show up where roads are.

No, correction, only where the game thinks roads are.

Some parking lots are detailed, so the game treats them as roads.

Other parking lots are not, so the game ignores them.

Some dirt roads are not on the map, so the game will not spawn things for them.

Etc.

Traces need to show up where people are walking, road or not.

No, correction, only where the game thinks roads are.

Based on my experience, I doubt that claim.

A while ago, I did an experiment with a group of PoGO-Friends (6 players in total). We went off the road, far away from where roads/pathes are displayed ingame - it was the middle of a dense forest where we went to participate in a hunter-workshop. We logged into the game (didn't see any traces) and left the game logged in for about 30 minutes. Then we all restarted the game and suddenly lots of traces appeared.

That leads me to the conclusion that traces don't spawn where roads are but where players are (within reason and asynchronously).

Although I'm inclined to agree with @Lucoire on this one, I can see how you came to your conclusion. I think in a way you are both saying the same thing. There is no doubt when I venture into nature spawns are fewer, surely reflecting cell traffic/active players. I think activity over time is key, regardless of where you are.

I have been in off-road areas, multiple times, and seen none.

There is definitely significantly less in off-road areas.

Have you ever done testing as a solo player?

Yes, actually. And they do spawn, just not like in a populated area. As a solo player camping with low connectivity I was seeing spawns at the rate of 1-2 per hour. Granted I wasn't focused on my phone most of the time but there were spawns.

The only time I have few to zero spawns has been while under sail (at the clip of a leisurely walk). Only when we crossed shipping lanes would something spawn or if we were close to shore.

Your argument is a "Fallacy of the converse".

You took the conditional statement "If <spawning> is switched off / faulty in an area, then you would not see any spawns" and invalidly inferred its converse "I didn't see any spawns, so the <spawning> is switched off / faulty". You ignored that the consequent "Didn't see any spawns" has more than one other possible antedecent (for example "the chance/frequency is so low that the moment you looked was unfortunate").

(it is also a "hasty generalisation" / "Fallacy of insufficient sample" - characterized by basing a broad conclusion on a small sample)

Spawn rate 1-2 per hour is very good. My home only have spawn rate about 1 - 2 per day. I have to walk around 400m to abundace traces spot.

I think the spawn rate related to POI? Wheter or not there is inn/GH/fortress

OK. Normally, I see spawn rates of one spawn every 2 minutes, average, while still. And, if I'm in an area with no roads, for two hours, and see no spawns, but as soon as I get near a road, the spawns resume at full speed, what reasonable conclusion can I draw?

My 2 cents coming in! I have experienced as a solo player, spawns generating away from roads. And over water! ( I paddle board)

Examples: I frequent a cemetery, a large city park, and a state owned privately run recreation area.

I have no difficulty encountering spawns..... but, that being said, the cemetery and the city park are 'contained'

within a larger urban area. The private Rec area is surrounded by residential dwellings.

So, to speculate, perhaps the spawn frequency and probability of encountering a spawn has more to do with:

    the amount of inns nearby'

    the amount of greenhouses nearby

    the amount of fortresses nearby

I have also learned that much of the network and location data we enjoy in this game was created by and is maintained by

players of a game known as Ingress. PoGo shares it too.

I can disprove nearby greenhouses/inns. There's a new Walmart in town, constructed over what used to be a greenhouse PoI. The greenhouse is still in-game, with no "roads" listed in open street map (I have driven the parking lot, with a trace, but the phone's GPS is off by a consistent amount all over). There are no spawns, even with a greenhouse there. Next to the Walmart is a corner mall, with the parking lot in OSM showing as roads in-game, and spawns happen as soon as I drive from the off-road walmart area to the "roads" of the corner mall.

There's a new hospital at the other end of town. Two or three inns (don't remember exactly), all current (so they were photographed/recorded after the hospital was built). Nothing spawns in the hospital area / parking lot -- again, nothing in open street map -- but as soon as you get to the roads, spawns appear.

In both cases: inns/greenhouses, no spawns in the non-roaded area, spawns as soon as you reach the roads.
