Switching Professions? Pro's & Con's...
edited February 2020 in Wizarding Challenges + Professions #1 latest comment 12 March, 2020, 02:45 am.
I'm currently a professor & have 109 out of the 134 lessons completed. I have 703 scrolls, yes, 703 & 1 restricted book, 3 spell books. I'm halfway thru level 33. I know you can switch professions at any given time. I know mazoologist & auror's require more lessons etc. When's the best time to switch, should a person switch, are there any benefits to it, & lastly, do you start all over & lose all your potion ingredients, stats, level achieved etc etc? Pro's/Con's? Has anyone switched & can share their experience? Inquiring mind here would love to be enlightened 😁

You don't lose anything and can switch back and forth, but you won't get any of your spent scrolls or books back.
I am mainly a professor but have done about 65 auror lessons and a few magizoo lessons. I just did them as I had loads of scrolls and wanted to spend some. I get different hexes and strengths in fortresses, which is okay, but it would be more beneficial if I was fortressing in groups so I could fill whatever profession gap existed in my group.
Let me ask everyone their opinion: if/when the next lesson plan is rolled out do you think the future lesson plan will require the same combination of scrolls, red spell books, and green spell books or will they release new colors of books and different types of scrolls so that when these lessons are rolled out the people that have boarded scrolls and books would be able to breeze through a bunch of the new lesson plans. I just entered the 3k scroll club and have 90 green books. So I am wondering if I should try to fill out another profession with what is currently in my vault or if I should hold onto them for the time being? Just doing a survey...thank you for your opinion in advance!!
I switched because apparently certain professions work better toward other SOS tasks and my original profession eventually required more brown books than I could spend on them. Of course I'll eventually have the same problem with the other two should I switch back, but I got bored and had a good 150ish scrolls just laying there lol
So I am an Auror first, mainly because my friends that talked me into playing were a professor and magizoo. So upon filling out my Auror tree and ending up with almost a thousand scrolls and twenty or so green books I threw magi into the mix. I'm now a lvl 9 magi so when I battle with one couple (both friends convinced their husbands to play), I can resume the Auror role and when battling with the other couple I can play as magi.
I'm still working on red books for my first profession so I have only used green books and scrolls for magizoologist.
@Bormacska so you can play 2 professions and have them coincide with one another?
@TwinGypsy You only have one active profession at a time, but you can switch between them without losing any progress.
So... If I decided to go and meet up with a magizoologist and an auror, I would play my usual professor. If the auror was sick and her professor friend joined us, I could go into the professions menu, switch to auror and then go into a fortress battle as an auror.. When finished, or if different people joined us, I could easily swap back to professor.
What @Magpie31 said in her usual brilliance! 👆👆👆. Please note that you cannot switch while in a fortress battle. You choose before you go in or you lose the runestone and the battle. Hope that helps you some! 😊
@Magpie31 @Bormacska Thank you both so very much! Huge huge help. I googled it, but you both really explained it much more to my understanding. Hehehe, soooo next question, just a matter of opinion, but how do I choose? Aurora or Mazoologist? I know the strengths/weaknesses of oddities for each. I'm assuming it's just a matter of personal preference. I'm 30k XP points away from level 34 (180,000XP). I still have 8 spell books & I need 25 to increase my final protego power. Restricted, I don't really care b/c it's all team power lesson mastering, & unfortunately, idk anyone where I just moved not will I be able to find anyone to play at a fortress. I just started playing at the end of November 2019. I'm thrilled with any advice or opinions you both have to offer. Huge help so far from both of you. Thank you thank you thank you 🌬️💋
@TwinGypsy for that you can look here on local groups and see if anyone has listed your area, or head over to discord, log into the wizards united discord and you should be able to search for locals from there. You can also Google and see if there is a local discord server set up. I know the Seattle server is crazy busy, but my area is relatively quiet despite the proximity.
Happy Pottering!
@Bormacska haha I grew up in Millcreek, Washington. Graduated from Cascade high school in Everett 96'... Small World 🤓
You would be surprised at the amount of growth and construction going on there in the past few years. I'm out in Woodinville which also is growing rapidly.
@TwinGypsy I’m glad you asked that question. When I couldn’t sleep the other night I spent my 1k scrolls and bunches of green books on Professor lessons. (I’m an Auror but need many red books to finish out my profession tree). After I spent all that, I was afraid I might need the green books for new Auror lessons. 😳 Everyone’s comments made me feel better about it.
@Bormacska I grew up in Woodinville. It has changed so much. I barely recognize much of it.
thanks for this great discussion everyone!
@Stirlingpiper @Bormacska I know!!!! I played in a wind ensemble back in highschool that met at Woodinville high school. I visited back in 2012 I think...& Woodinville, Millcreek, Bothell & all those areas keep building & tearing down trees etc etc. I didn't recognize anything because they've built so many shopping centres & restaurants and business plazas. Crazy.
Thanks for the guidance on the profession switch. I'm grade 11 in the Professor profession. @Bormacska @Stirlingpiper @MommaMary @MrSciGuy @CBG92 @Magpie31 @ClairabusGryff with there's professions & switching, I decided to try all 3, lol but only on certain days haha. I'm assuming the higher level you are, the higher XP you receive? Keep in mind my friends, I have never ever played video games or online games except back in the day with where in the world is Carmen San Diego, Tetris for a hot minute & the original Nintendo when I stayed over at friends sleep overs back in the day. Yes, yes I feel really old, haha. Ok ok ok- In the fortress... it completely threw me off, because of the strategic spellcast boxes they're completely different for each profession and Mazoologist totally threw me for a loop. So yesterday, I went and switched to Auror just because I wanted to see. I understand that the whole idea is to have everybody play together as a team/in groups but I don't even know which profession I should stick with consistently? Again, I switched to Auror yesterday & I'm digging the Auror so far even tho I'm only on grade 4; as opposed to the Mazoologist. I switched that up the day you responded, so I'm at grade 7 on the mazoologist front. That's what helped use my 700+ scrolls LOL. I can't find anything on here or in the gamer websites that has an in depth overview about all that. I'm sorry if I'm frustrating. I don't mean to be. I guess I'm trying to figure out a personal strategy for myself. If anyone of you guys know of anything, website or a page or link, please let me know! I tried on here but came up empty. Anyway, I appreciate all of your time & patience with me!!! Have a spectacular day!
@TwinGypsy I’ve been a professor from day one, so I’m definitely not the person to ask about switching professions. But I will say I love professor! Deterioration hex is in my opinion one of the best strategic spells in the game.
I have been switching professions from the begining it like rock paper scissor so you can beat some monsters better then others with a different profession but it's about the same doesn't seem to be down side.
just a matter of opinion, but how do I choose? Aurora or Mazoologist? ... unfortunately, idk anyone where I just moved not will I be able to find anyone to play at a fortress.
Why did you leave out Professor?
I tried Auror, but found that I died too much. Others have told me that Magezoolologists might last more attack, but do less damage per attack.
Professor seems to be a good balance for solo.
Came here to ask this exact question. I've entered the world of obscene scroll numbers, over 50 green books, and a measly 4 RB. Need (according to my terrible math) 300 or so RB to complete the final 15 Auror lessons.
Interesting to think we may need them again for new lesson plans. However if the scarcity of RB in relation to the GB and scrolls continues, then there's no fear of ploughing through Auror part 2!
Reckon I'll collect the next round of GB from the brilliant event part 2, and then splurge!
@Majikum I ended up investing in all 3. I do 90% of the time stick with my original professorship lol. As far as fortresses, I think I am leaning towards Auror for my favourite, but I didn't think beforehand and used most of my extra scrolls for Mazoology. No biggie. I am maxed out with the powers I care about in professor, so anything I get is put towards Auror lessons. All the lessons I have left in Professor are either for teamwork spell stuff (which realistically, I won't probably ever play with anyone). So, just plugging along. I still don't quite understand the strategic spell casts for each profession while in the fortress. I understand it's with the intent to have teammates play within the fortress. Each individual using their spell cast in "teamwork" etc. But I don't have that option & I'm more or less trying to understand the benefits of each cast & it's purpose within the profession and playing in the fortress. I know if you tap on it, it gives a brief description of what it does. But I guess I require a more in depth description lol!!
Lvl 14 professor & lvl 9 magizoologist here! As I'm now officially over 1k scrolls and the second brilliant event is due: I'm going to switch (again!) to Auror. The green books don't add value to my (solo) professor any more, and I've managed up to "become the beast" with my magizoologist. Red books will continue to be invested in professor. Scrolls and green books will be going towards my Auror. I'm not too worried about extra lesson plans: as scrolls can be gained in large amounts during brilliant events (every fortnight or so) and about 15 green books can be had as well. The ratio for red books is the bottleneck, so I save them for my professor.
Personal decision of course! But I hope it gives some perspective. :)
All the lessons I have left in Professor are either for teamwork spell stuff (which realistically, I won't probably ever play with anyone).
Those are not "Working with a team".
Those are "Having more than 1 enchantment on you".
Brain Elixir counts, as does the "whole team gets a bonus".
Combined with shield, that's 3 enchantments you can cast on yourself, playing solo.
It sounds like a professor profession would be the best for use as solo play? That's what I got from reading the posts. Is this correct? I have never seen another person at any of the places I've been here. I'm currently an auror, but I started as a professor. I switched over pretty quickly, but I'd like to find out the most beneficial one to level up for solo play. Opinions?
@piano3 I have found that being an Auror is pretty satisfying. I can, depending upon the RNG, play almost any level without too much fuss. Yes, anything above Forest 3 can start slurping potions (usually the heals), and yes spiders are NOT my friend, but I manage nonetheless. Professors seem to have one of the longer roads ahead of them in terms of green books (waiting for events), Magizoologists have the hardest road of grind-ing for red books (although that can be eased if your friends love you and send you everything extravagant, particularly runes). Whichever you choose, best of luck to you!
