Strategic spell cast red dot in fortresses in wizarding challenges

So I've been a die hard 41 year old grown up, playing more than the average. Just had surgery so I'm keeping busy. Aaaanywaaay, finally made it to level 30, yeah I'm proud cuz if you knew me, I don't play video games. Ok ok ok, here's my question. I've googled & come up with zilch. When in the fortress, lined up the circle to zero in on let's say a dark wizard. Why am I able to sometimes tap on that red dot without making a trace, and it moves closer to my wand? I hope that makes sense? I don't have a screenshot. It's usually on the zig zag spell casts. I've also noticed if I count 5 seconds or so before I cast a spell back in a wizarding challenge, that many times I get a critical hit? If I do the spell to fast, the red dot just goes to the end of the trace & I have to tap it to get it back to where it was originally... I'm mainly just curious, cuz I can't figure out what's the cause or if it's good or bad? Can't find any guidance on any of the sites except to trace as fast as you can... Which isn't altogether true. Also does it help to trace & keep your finger pressed while casting a spell, similar to protego & you have to keep your finger pressed until the entity is finished attacking? I hope I'm explaining correctly aside from writing a book here. Any advice, input is definitely welcome. Thank you so much in advance. -Yaz* Boothbay Harbour, Maine @TwinGypsy

@Dewin99 I figured maybe I could pick your brain if any of what I'm writing makes sense & you have the time. P.S. been getting all my daily rewards lol! Thanks to you & your help in explaining.

I think I only see a red dot if I miscast, and so I cast again. Also, when you cast protego, you don’t have to keep your finger on the screen until the attack is done. Just cast, and the protego spell does the rest.

oh wait, when you line up the circles before your attack, do you take your finger off the screen before doing the spell trace? That would give you a red dot for miscast. I think those red dots you’re seeing are all miscasts. When you line up the circles and then it shows you your spell glyph, don’t remove your finger! Just go straight into the trace. My hubby had huge trouble with this when he started, he was constantly taking his finger off the screen before doing his cast. Eventually he got the hang of it. With combat, either in the fortress or against oddities, I don’t think speed matters when casting. You just need to be fairly accurate. Once you complete the trace, you don’t need to keep your finger on the screen. Hopefully that all makes sense.

@Dogoutlaw Soooooo, I feel like a complete idiot lol! You are certainly correct. I've been doing exactly what you anticipated. Which mind you, not lifting my finger is a difficult habit to break. Thank you so much for helping. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

@TwinGypsy Not an idiot, you just didn't know! I'm glad I could help. Hopefully that will help you with the timer when in the fortress, save you some time with your casts. Good luck to you!

@Dogoutlaw completely off-topic, but how do you mark something as “best answer?” I just see everything as comments, not necessarily answers. And I never see any option to mark something as answered or best answer for that matter.

Actually @MrSciGuy and @Bormacska I wasn't sure of this myself. But in my notifications, it says the OP "accepted" my answer. So I'm guessing if you post a topic as a "question," you have the ability to select the best answer. Who knew?! lol
