New Shop Item: Expand Our Radius
I’d like to request a new item in the shop...
Expand our Avatar’s Radius
Permanent (like expanding vault space)
3,000 Gold Coins
Fortresses have two radius’es. There’s the one that we need to be within to start a Fortress Challenge, and then an extended one that we have to be within to keep participating in a Fortress Challenge.
This new shop item will allow our Radius on the map to extend a little bit further, allowing us to reach more things.
Can’t quite reach that Inn as your friend is driving you down the road? Now you can.
Can’t quite reach those extra Inns from the café you’re sitting at? Now you can.
Can’t quite reach that Fortress across the road from the park you’re in? Now you can.
This feature of course would rely on Inns etc activating based on my radius interacting with the Inn, rather than my Avatar entering the Inn’s radius, so I’m not sure if it’s possible for the Devs to make this happen.
I’m confident however that if you made this feature, that you would have a heap of players dropping money into the game to buy this upgrade.
More money for the Developers means they keep making the game I like to play.
Win:Win.
3,000 might be too much. That’s a $20 package of coins plus a $10 package of coins. Or it’s the equivalent of seven Vault Upgrades. It’s just an example.
The point is, it should be large enough that we can work towards it or we can be impatient and drop cash without breaking the bank. This should be a permanent enhancement that improves game experience for people that play a lot, without being gated in a “pay to enjoy the game” way.

I remember suggesting something similar for Ingress, so I really am onbord with the Idea. That being said, there is something at the back of my mind that tells me (ever since I suggested my Ingress-Idea years ago), that this is a bad idea. So, before I tell you what my worries are, I'll give you a taste of what My Idea for Ingress was, followed by how this could be applied to HPWU:
Ingress
The Premise for my Idea is that with each level-up you get a Talent-Point, which you can spend for available talents. Note that there are more talents available than Talent-Points - even at max-level.
Explorer
[Given] The User has the "Explorer"-Achievement on "Onyx" Level (30'000 unique POI hacked)
[and] The User has a free Talent Point
[When] The User spends that Talent-Point on the "Explorer"-Achievement
[Then] The Hacking-Distance for POI is doubled
Pioneer
[Given] The user has the "Pioneer"-Achievement on "Onyx" Level (20'000 unique POI captured)
[and] The User has a free Talent Point
[When] The User spends that Talent-Point on the "Pioneer"-Achievement
[Then] The Capturing-Distance for POI is doubled
HPWU
I'm going to borrow your "gold-sink" idea but add the additional "pre-requisite" of Achievements
"Honorary Inn-Keeper"
[Given] The user has the "Inns dined at III"-Achievement (Dine at Inns 2000 times)
[When] The User spends 3000g on the "Innkeeper"-Shop item (unique per Account)
[Then] The Distance at which Inns can be entered (and accio'ed) is doubled; activating Dark Detectors is un-changed
"harvester"
[Given] The user has the "Greenhouses Harvested III"-Achievement (Harvest 2000 Greenhouses)
[When] The User spends 3000g on the "Harvester"-Shop item (unique per Account)
[Then] The Distance at which Greenhouses can be entered (and harvested) is doubled; planting seeds is un-changed
"Planter"
[Given] The user has the "Ingredient Seeds Planted III"-Achievement (Plant 200 Seeds at Greenhouses)
[When] The User spends 3000g on the "Planter"-Shop item (unique per Account)
[Then] The Distance at which Greenhouses can be entered (and seeds planted) is Doubled; harvesting is un-changed
(same for the "Fortress" distance with the "Wizarding Challenges Won III" Achievement)
Now for why I think this might not be such a good idea:
The game wants us to walk, to explore, to exercise, to socialize. If the distance needed to interact with the virtual locations is further, then the incentive to actually go to the real locations is diminished. But since the game wants us to go places, reducing the incentive to do so would be a conflict of interest.
That being said, I still like the idea. I just doubt that we'll get it.
I think this idea makes much more sense for WU than it would have for Ingress. Even if I can swipe an inn from twice as far away, that doesn't remove my incentive to get out and move around, just makes it easier for me to perform one particular task while I am out.
Because game play in Ingress revolves around being able to capture/deploy a portal, allowing some people to do so from a greater range would actually create a significant imbalance. Similarly, in Pokémon Go if one person can reach a gym from further away then this provides a huge edge when battling for control of the gym. Since there is no real competition in WU over control of the POIs, extending the range wouldn't present the same issues.
I kind of like your suggestion @Lucoire because it gives us things to work towards which aren't essential but do provide some small benefit. Because not everyone can get all of the talents, it allows us to distinguish ourselves from other players as well (at this point I'm sure my skill tree looks like the majority of other day 1 professors out there, and after 3 more brilliant events we will all have exactly the same skills).
I know if I had this it wouldn’t stop me from walking and exploring. What it would do is let me interact with more things.
Ingress is a PVP game of kicking over other people’s sandcastles. Same goes for PoGo.
WU isn’t, it’s collaborative. This feature in Ingress or PoGo would just enable Trolls to be nasty at a distance. All this would do in WU is to expand what we can interact with. More interaction means more gameplay.
@MtPollux @Razorgirl As I said earlier, I'm not against it. Quite the opposite.
But given that it contains a conflict of interest regarding the game's incentive, I would add the requirement of certain achievements - the gold level would probably suffice. That "should" help making sure that "new players" aren't given the wrong impression regarding the nature and incentive of the game.
You believe it conflicts with the game's incentive. I don't.
You believe it conflicts with the game's purpose of encouraging exploring; I don't.
I believe that one of the game's primary goals in addition to getting out and exploring is to get people to get together to work collaboratively.
There are some Points of Interest that I cannot interact with due to property barriers or dangerous terrain (roads, bridges, etc). This would allow me to interact with these landmarks safely. As it stands, I cannot interact with them ever.
You believe that this feature conflicts with the game's primary goals. I believe it will enhance them.
Given the current pandemic, I feel like this has suddenly become more relevant to more people. 💙
