are the items in a Portkey determined by where they are picked up or where they are used? what is different between the gold & silver keys?

Portkeys do not always give credit for km's walked... very disappointing.

Wish there was a color code or some other way to determine which Portkey I am opening after I have unlocked it

2k normally give the smallest rewards, while 10k portkeys give the greatest. There are exceptions though. Some can be a pleasant surprise, like several thousand player XP from a 2k portkey. Others might be disappointing, like common ingredients and a foundable fragment you've already maxed out from a 10k portkey. It's pretty random.

Distance walked not registering accurately is a common complaint. I don't pay very close attention, so I haven't had an issue with this. What I have noticed is it sometimes takes a while for the portkey progress to catch up with you. I'll have a look at my progress on a 5k and it'll say 4.2 out of 5. However, after engaging a trace on the map, a notification will pop up saying the portkey is unlocked even though I haven't moved since I last checked it.

The fact that you can't discern 2k from 5k or 10k portmanteaus on the map is a hot topic, and most agree that this is likely intentional. Without certain elements of the game being random, there's no real challenge to it. On the other hand, most players also agree that you should be able to tell them apart once they're unlocked. Currently, they all show up as boots. It'd be nice if 10k portkeys were a rusty pail and 5k ones were a worn tire, or something along that line.
