In Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, a mysterious event called the Calamity has unfolded, leaving traces of magic called Foundables all over the Muggle world. Members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force need to not only try and stop the Calamity, but figure out why it occurred. With that said, what have we learned about the Calamity from Chapter 3?

1) Penelope’s parents were supporters of You-Know-Who.

  • Penelope’s mother was sent to Azkaban following the Battle of Hogwarts and was an active Death Eater in service to Voldemort. Like many people with pasts that link them, however tangentially, to the Dark Lord, Penelope has spent her life under suspicion. Despite this, she has managed to forge a career as a very respected Auror, which made her disappearance all the more disturbing for those who knew her.

2) She was an excellent Auror, but the work on her last case was shrouded in mystery.

  • Penelope had her own style of working—a common trait amongst Aurors. She often would use obscure codes to encrypt her notes, even sending Grim personal cyphers. When she disappeared along with the other members of the London Five, it became clear that she was especially circumspect about the case she was working on. Her secretive nature made uncovering leads more difficult, but also inspired some to assert that perhaps she was hiding something—especially after Grim was accused of starting the Calamity.

3) The Calamity appears undeniably tied to Grim and Penelope.

  • Penelope’s disappearance was strange enough—no witnesses, no evidence. But with Grim’s connection to the Calamity, some Ministry officials are starting to believe that the Calamity could have a further association with the London Five. Is Grim more than just a loving husband desperate for the return of his wife? Or was he after something more? Perhaps he was after revenge on a Ministry that was unable, or unwilling, to bring his wife home?

My personal theory is that the Calamity is a temporal Paradoxon.

Based on what we've observed so far, it transports people and things from the past to a different time.

Grim, loving Husband of Penelope, misses his wife. So the Calamity itself could actually be in his favor, bringing Penelope from the Past to the "present", where he could potentially find her.

The "paradox"-Part is that - maybe - the Calamity was also the reason for her disappearance.

    • IF Grim caused the Calamity, then he caused Penelope's disappearance in an attempt to undo her disappearance. Ironic.
    • IF Grim did not cause the Calamity, he might be out there, somewhere, trying to find the "Penelope"-Foundable and send her back to the past, thereby undoing the "London Five" event - at least partly.
