please someone tell me how to be awarded a 5 rune as no matter what I do I only seem to get 1 x 5 rune a week and friends get loads, I am bonus level on all but 2 categories and have at least 1 gold page in each, I am level 38, almost 39 yet still can't get 5s , I do at least 3 level 13 challenges a day and am missing out on challenge xp as my friends use 5 runes and my highest is a 3 or if I am lucky a level 4, I get less challenge xp for working just as hard as the others and as a magizoo I am also jumping out to revive others, it just doesn't seem right as i need more red books and get less reward. Am i just unlucky or what?.

I’ve had this hypothesis swirling around in my mind that if I’m sitting at 98 or 97/100 on an exploration family and I rank up by catching a high, severe, or emergency threat, that’ll guarantee me a level 5 runestone. I haven’t tested this idea. It’s only a guess and it’s probably not true. Really, I think it’s just luck.
I think there's a bit of luck and randomness to the runestones we get. With that said, we seem to start getting more 5's as we max out the family ranks and prestige those pages. When you say you only get one 5 a week, I'm curious, out of how many? Do you get five to ten runestones a week, and one of those is a 5 runestone? I'm not meaning any offense, but we don't get 5's 100% of the time, not even 50% of the time, even at max rank, etc. It's probably closer to 10-20% (based on others' numbers and examples; I don't have solid proof of that). I've maxed rank on all families, finished gold frames, etc. Without having kept record, I think I get 2's, 3's, and 4's more than 1's and 5's. Also, it's been reported by another community member, who does keep fabulous records, her 5 runestone drops have decreased recently, meaning the percentage of 5's has dropped. So there could be multiple things going on to cause what you are seeing.
I truly get what you're saying about the challenge XP and needing the 5's to max your efficiency (hubby is a MZ and needs those red books too). If you really feel your friends are getting more 5's than you, perhaps you and they can keep records of the runestones received over the next month (not counting the event runestones), and then you can compare percentages to see if there really is a discrepancy. If you find there is, by all means, post those results here so the admins and devs can take a look. The game is not perfect as we all know, but it should be fair, and those kind of things should be pointed out when found.
Thanks for the idea and I just tried it on oddities I was on 98/100 and caught horned serpent putting me on 113 ,I claimed my rune stone and it was a level 2. I think that I am just unlucky , I am trying to save some 5s to do challenges when visiting my son during Feb half term as we use this time to do as many Dark challenges as we can between the 3 of us. my husband is level 41, he gets 5s all the time and I just get 2s or 3s.
to answer Dogoutlaw at present I am on bonus level on all but 1 family, I average 6 runes a day my tally is 180 x 1 runes, 223 x 2 runes, 67 x 3 runes, 16 x 4 runes, and 1 x 5 runes + 52 event runes. I do 6 challenges a day normally forest level and now need 3400 to get 2 books. I need about 150 more red books to finish all lessons and am level 39.
The thing about looking at your runestone inventory, it doesn't exactly take into account what you use to help you figure out what you've received. You said, or at least implied, you use your 5's and 4's when you have them, so those numbers are going to be lower than the rest. I understand what you are trying to show, and it very well may be you get less 5's than the average (maybe even less 4's than the average), but it's a hard thing to judge based on inventory when you've been using those runestones. Making a record of what you receive would help much more.
Ok I have just totaled my husbands runes, we go out together and do challenges together we catch mainly the same stuff although I still go to work and he is semi retired, his tally is 1 x 1 rune, 15 x 2 runes, 36 x 3 runes , 56 x 4 runes and 40 x 5 runes. He does do some small challenges in the mornings when I am working but we do the same forest and Dark challenges in the evenings, I work in school so clock up a lot more portkeys than him.

3 days into counting runes 11 x 2, 9 x 3, 4 x4 ,2 x 5. that is about 1:12 or 8% so far . I did get a 5 from an extravagant rune gift though.
Ok one week on from my initial post, I am now level 40 still doing 6 fortresses a day infact 7 since the event started and Buffalo last 1 hour, my total rune stones earned from family XP is 11 x 2 runes, 12 x 3 runes, 15 x 4 runes and finally 3 x 5 runes so my 4 's have gone up by a few my total is 41 runes of which 3 have been 5's that works out 1/13 is a 5 . I think that is very unfair not only that yesterday I was doing a forest level 5 with a 4 rune and I had 10 foes to fight alone 2 of which were elites. obviously I lost, I really feel that I am being treated unfairly. I will continue keeping records for a further week but if nothing changes I am not sure if I will continue doing fortress challenges.
@Caecelious So if I’m reading your last posts correctly, you’ve collected 3 x L3; 11 x L4 and 1 x L5 runestones in just 4 days? I’d be pretty happy with that personally.
I’m sorry to hear that you had a nightmare with Forest 5 with a L4 runestone, 10 foes is a bit extreme, with or without any elites.
I’d advise you to continue to keep current records in order to ascertain how rare/frequent this happens.

Perhaps I'm meant to keep my mouth shut and let people think they're getting a more than they really are! Some people still insist that increasing family rank improves your odds. I have proven this to be false.
I will agree as 1 of my L5 runes was from a family that is not a bonus level.
@Caecelious by "not a bonus level", do you mean not above 65*?
Yeah, early on I was one of those who believed maxing out exploration family rank resulted more Level 4 and 5 runestones, but that clearly isn't the case. Other ideas, when tested, also proved false. I think it's somewhat random and, just like foundables and gifts, the better ones are harder to come by. My stock of Level 5 runestones continues to decline, even though I've been using less of them than I was before finishing up the red books on my first lesson plan. Based on that alone, I'm still convinced these have been nerfed. I haven't kept stats, so I can't say exactly how much of a decrease I've experienced, but I imagine it's probably similar to @WerewolfChaser's numbers.
I have now kept a record of my rune stones for 1 month. As school hols are over it's back to work. I am not gaining as many runes, so here goes 7/1/20 - 31/1/20, 6 x L1 runes; 23 x L2 runes; 37 x L3 runes; 40 x L4 runes; 21 x L5 runes. my level 5 runes have risen to 21/127 about 1 in 6 . Many thanks to all who have helped.
Level 5 and level 1 runestones are just rare drops. The highest chance to get level 5 runestones are extravagant and magnificent runestone gifts.
Otherwise utilizing trace charm+high proficiency will help you level your family xp faster for the things you catch.
