@Dewin99 - i do see the real you, don’t think otherwise, “mr. oh-are-you-welsh-too?”

and there’s nothing wrong conversing in welsh, and i have no interest in google-translating welsh, so have at it in welsh, wiz

@kiheikid I doubt anyone else here would understand me for starters, coupled with the fact that I’m not trying to hide anything from anyone, so why would I?

Granted, I did say Nadolig Llawen (Merry Christmas), has that offended you?

@Dewin99 - merry christmas does not offend; you, well yes

@kiheikid What you mean is "Ich stimme nicht zu" ("I do not agree") or "Ich bin anderer Meinung" ("I have a different opinion"). And as for the Country I come from, that does not concern you.

@Lucoire - doch! you can call my idiom an insult but that does not make it so. i have no idea how anyone looks like, so what logic is there in insulting with a specific physical description that may likely be completely off the mark? it is indeed a redewendung or a witzig spitzname, that’s it. and fine, i don’t mean to pry and no need to know, just curious. you could say germany or austria but that’s no concern of mine (though there are differences in austrian german and high german and regional forms of german and even swiss german) so please consider the question withdrawn.

thanks @OriginalCaruso for trying to turn this 18-wheeler on a dime back to OP (the scrolls part, but cats are fine too). i think ironically most if not all of us who have gone off-topic here for 3 pages have become way too chatty, in essence, blockfloetengesichter

@kiheikid Do you REALLY want to use a foreign language that you're bad in to be disrespectful towards others - something that's EXPLICITLY prohibited by the community guidelines?

    To quote the guidelines:

In short, treat others as you would like to be treated. Remember that certain interactions that seem harmless or fun to you may be perceived differently by bystanders or other players.

    and a little later

It’s in everyone’s best interest to keep things courteous and fun for all. Respect other players and other people, both in the game and in the real world.

So even if you meant it as a "funny nickname" it may not be perceived as such - and if that's the case you shouldn't have done it in the first case. MYOB does not apply here.

are you guys that dense? a blockfloete - gesicht translated literally is a flute/recorder - face. the face blows into the flute/recorder ... hence lots of air being blown, hence its use as an idiom for lots of chatting with or without anything of importance or relevance. so it’s a chatterbox ... maybe taken to an extreme a windbag which all of us in this conversation are turning that idiom into. it does not stand for what dewin is trying to twist it into, at all.

by the way, y’all know you’re dogpiling, right, but that doesn’t mean you’re being called dogs? it is an idiom.

@kiheikid No, you've clearly misunderstood what the expression means.

To play a wooden flute, you need to press a lot of air into the instrument, creating a very particular facial expression in the process - which commonly isn't thought of as favorable. There are several other, similar insults referring to certain "less than favorable" facial expressions in the german language.

Another way of explaining it is to imagine the head of a person as full of air (instead of brain) just like the instrument - consequentally implying that the other person is an idiot.

And as we've already clearly established, german is a foreign language to you. Don't even try to use more niche expressions that you don't understand or know the origin of.

@Lucoire - if you are pulling the native speaker trump card, i can’t match or beat it because i’m not a native speaker. but at my best my german was pretty good while i studied and lived in germany, and that was how i learned the term — from my german language professor, and not from my german-born relatives and not from the american GIs (who focused on other parts of the anatomy than the face). honestly, someone in germany is more likely to laugh at the description the idiom provides than take offense, and no one in particular was named with or without an @ tag ... really, we are just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point and the dead horse has long been beaten past any recognition ... oh, i forget, hence the dogpile. bravo.

i am tired of blowing into my recorder ... you guys continue to blow into your recorders if you want but you’ll only be proving the definition by your own actions.

... and you continue to downplay your insult and offence again and again. And as a german native I'm not going to let you get off that easily.

Even if you meant it as a way of saying that the conversation is pointless and hollow, EVEN THEN it is an insult against all participants.

I've tried educating you on the topic of Community Guidelines and point out your disrespectful behavior in that regard and you continue to be disrespectful.

    As for the insult:

(Translation: "Fluteface" is a synonym for hollowhead. The comparison is made based on the 7 holes of a flute and of the human head, which both emit nothing but warm/hot air: 2x ears, 2x nose, 2x eyes, 1x mouth)

Admitedly it is rarely used anymore but it was quite common in the 80s and up to the 2000s.

And as for the question of "idiom / insult" and whether that still applies given that you've mentioned nobody: You referred to another person in a language that's not spoken that often in the forum, thereby giving your insult a discriminatory nature - targeting only the people of a certain linguistic origin.

@kiheikid I’m not twisting your words, if you want to blame someone, blame the online German-English dictionary.

I’ll tell you what. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on your misuse of the term. As you said, it’s your second language, I can understand and appreciate that. We all make mistakes.

You have contributed many useful and positive posts over the previous months, and I particularly appreciate your ‘Spoiler Alerts’.

My offer still stands, stop insulting people (in all languages, openly or not), and I promise you won’t get a response from me.

@Lucoire - genau! (= exactly ! ) a chatterbox who is blowing hot air, ie talking a lot , perhaps without anything of relevance or substance to add! it is an idiomatic reference to the action of blowing air, ie talking, ... a lot. not a commentary on one’s looks.

but you’re playing your native speaker trump card (and take you at your word as to your bona fides) and finding a slight that i wonder how many others in germany really would. tell you what, i’ll try it out next time i visit my rellies near hamburg and koeln. like here, i am not going to call anyone in particular that, but i will use it as a reference in the same context as i did here and see if anyone there cringes or gets upset or laughs. it will be part of my resumed german language studies.

    ——

and here i am still tooting the chorus to your verses.

    @kiheikid

To further educate you: The Wilmersdorfer Widows were Survivors of WW2 - coping with the horrors that they experienced by developing a very crude and extremely rude humor (and some other socially unacceptable views). In the Musical "Line 1" they're even portrayed as vile and cruel, rude and malcontent - essentially trolls that use their status as "war survivors" to protect themselves from the repercussions they may face as a result of their offences.

But in regards to the Community Guidelines that is irrelevant. Insults (even perceived ones) are UNACCEPTABLE. Disrespectful demeanor or expressions are UNACCEPTABLE.

the famous play Linie 1 was after my time (though i have ridden the actual thing). i did meet a few real witwen of wilmersdorf, and the ladies i met were neither as crude nor as oversensitive as others have asserted them to be. i won’t mistake that they were representative of all folks of their generation, just as i believe you are not representative of all folks of your generation, @Lucoire ... do you not agree this horse is dead and beaten beyond recognition? or is this a correspondence course by professors?

ps- you guys can continue to “thumbs up” each other’s posts and thereby mutually increase your activity rankings for all i care - it doesn’t mean anything, as lola explained.
