Potions
How many potions can be used at one time in wizarding challenges or when out and about returning confoundables or oddities? Is there a limit? And which potions are best when used together or does that not particularly matter?

@LadyRedIII You can use one potion for a given effect. So for instance if you don't have an effect from an exstimulo potion, you can use one while fighting. However, you cannot use another even of a different type of exstimulo until yours has worn off. Other potions have immediate effects like the health potion. That you can take as many as you want while you are not at full health. Baruffio and trace detection have timers and you cannot use another until the time runs out. What potions that you will want to use will vary on the circumstances. If you need more of a certain foundable which keeps fleeing on you, you may want to use a dawdle draft and/or exstimulo potion. During fortresses, using health potions is helpful, but so is knowing when you can die as you will be revived after a period of time. Exstimulo potions are extremely helpful in the wizard tower for opponents you are not good at fighting as it will help you defeat it much quicker, saving health and energy. Which type of exstimulo you choose you will have to decide based on how many hits it will likely take to defeat it, your current stock of the potion, and how long it will take you to brew more. Sometimes you can afford to use a potion simply to **** quicker and save energy. Other times you may not want to do that as you won't be able to replenish your supply as quick as you are using it. There is a balance that you will have to find.
You may have noticed I did not talk about invigoration drafts. As an Auror your active skills take 1 focus, so they are not difficult to have the energy to cast without potions. The value of invigoration drafts for Auror's is in the ability to give focus to others. If a magizoologist uses a strong Invigoration draft, all 3 focus go to them and only they can spend it. If an Auror uses a strong invigoration draft, they can give 2 focus to a professor and 1 to the magizoologist based on the needs of that battle. Auror's provide a lot more flexibility to groups with invigoration drafts in this way as there is less waste. However, if you are in the tower without a group the invigoration draft will not benefit you.
Oh, that's a question... Many are stackable, maybe easier to go by potion...?
Baruffio's can be used at all times, stackable.
Tonic for Trace detection is same, stackable.
Dawdle is a one time use against map confoundables, stackable with other applicable potions.
Healing potion is a one time use, can use with map oddities as well as during battles in fortress. It is used once and gone, you can use while you have other active potions going.
Wit-Sharpening, used in fortress battles against ELITE foes. It is stackable.
Both invigorations, used in the fortress. It's a one and done, can be used while other potions are going.
All three exstimulos, can be used against everything. Is stackable, although I don't think you can use two different kinds of exstimulos at once.
Hopefully I remembered them all!
Thanks dogoutlaw! So the wit sharpening potion is just against elite foes and not the others? (Making sure I understood this correctly) and does tonic for trace detection work when on the map and not of any benefit in the fortress?
On the trace tonic, although it can be used at all times, it would be a waste to use while battling in fortress.
There is no limit on how many at same time as far as I know.
Many people like to use Baruffio's while opening portkeys, and when you're going to do some concentrated active playing to maximize its use. Catching lots of foundables. Even when you're really high in fortress playing with five friends, it can up the XP payout.
In the fortress, you can use wit-sharpening together with an exstimulo to pack a bigger punch against a tougher elite foe.
With rare foundables, like red-beam emergency foundables, myself and some others like to use potent exstimulo with dawdle. Many think dawdle doesn't work, and fair enough since foundables still flee sometimes. As someone once said, I use it when I don't want to risk it fleeing. What if I don't use it and it flees? Would it have stayed if I had used it?? I'd rather use it and not take the chance. Just my two cents on that, but everyone has different styles and preferences.
Some others might chime in with their experiences too, or what they think works best. Since we all play a little different sometimes... Hopefully someone will comment if I missed something, or made an error.
Ha, sorry, I was making another post! Yes, correct, elite only with wit-sharpening. The game will allow you to use wit-sharpening against non-elites, but it doesn't do anything, so it would be a waste.
Oh, I just caught confusing language in first comment. Maybe I should read through more carefully!
Dawdle lasts for 3 casts, so not exactly one time use. I just meant it can only be used on one foundable. It doesn't carry over to the next. The exstimulos are similar to that.
😄🥳 Thank you dogoutlaw!! I appreciate your help! *taking notes* 📝
Sorry @Ginnungagap , your post must have went in for moderation. It wasn't there when I replied!
@LadyRedIII Ginnungagap's reply has great info as well. Hopefully you can see that one now.
Yes I can see it now dogoutlaw- thank you 😊
ginnungagap - oh that is good to know for the invigoration Draught. So unless I am battling with a group in the fortress it isn’t something that I really need, right?
@LadyRedIII correct. It is one of the best and least useful potions for our profession. It is interesting in that way. When you are planning to do fortress battles the structure of the group if there is one really affects the balance of potions you may want. However, you can NEVER go wrong with strong exstimulos. Potents can take too long to brew which makes a lot of people hesitate using them appropriately. Regular exstimulo potions give an ok boost but significantly weaker and 1 less cast compared to strong extimulo. The difference between 3 casts and 4 casts is much greater than 4 to 5 for potents. Much easier to waste part of the potent which takes so long to brew. I <3 strong exstimulos.
That is really good to know - thanks Ginnungagap! 😄 🧪
Some excellent info here.
Just an update for newbies coming in now-
Dawdle Draught and Estimulos Potions now stay active and carry over to the next traces (depending on strength of estimulos.) I find this so much more reason to keep strong estimuloes going.
Wit Sharpening is also 3 turns and will stay to the next foe as well.
Just to add to that @TZB Dawdle draught carries over into fortress challenges, acting as an enhancement. It lasts as long as you want.
@Dewin99 how does it act as an enhancement in fortress challenges?
@LadyRedIII I’m not sure how, it just does.
@LadyRedIII the dawdle draught itself has no effect on you when you enter the fortress. But if a professor has part of a dawdle draught potion carrying over from the last encounter, that will count as an enhancement in the fortress for the professor's skills.
Extulimo potions stack. You only have 1 active at a time but you can drink a regular extulimo and then decide to change to strong extulimo. You can even go the whole hog and drink a potent. The higher level is consumed first and then works it's way down in effectiveness.
Seriously?! I need to try this!
I really didn't know that @WerewolfChaser !! So you drink from lowest to highest all in a row while still active? And it uses the most potent first? Can u drink them in other order eg a strong then a basic & it will do the same?
I'm so confused by this cos i thought whenever you drink any exstimulo you can't then drink another cos it says that potion is already active? But you mean there's a way around this?
@LadyRedIII just one thing has occurred to me that I found out at beginning that I didn't know and had got wrong til @Dogoutlaw thankfully put me straight-
With the master notes you enter on brewing times for potions...(another reason why strong exstimulo is always the winner to go for of the 3)... you can enter them at any time and it takes the 15% off the official brew time for that potion.
I mistakenly thought it would take 15% from the time remaining so was thinking it barely worth it if id forgotten til the last 30 min perhaps. But it does take the full amount off, meaning that can make the potion be brewed immediately if the time reduced works out that way.
So just in case- thought I'd say about this cos maybe I'm not the only one who thought it takes 15% of whatever brew time you have remaining.
However, it could well just be me! 😂
@AuroraKadavra You cannot drink a lower extulimo than what is currently active.
If you drink a basic then strong and top it off with a potent, you will have 5 casts using the potent, 4 casts with the strong and 3 casts with the basic.
I'll sometimes take a potion and then realise I need a little more potency so I'll drink a higher level whilst the lower one is still active.
With the master notes I will often queue a baruffilo potion due for brewing whilst I'll be offline. I put the notes in before it finishes to cut it down.
