Does anyone have any tips to get the portkey "square" to appear?

I feel like this is such a noob question, sorry. I have been playing since release and I am no better at it than when I started.

I click the portkey and walk around, waving my phone side to side. When I see the sparkles, it doesn't seem to matter.

Eventually, if I walk back and forth enough, waving my phone around it lets me in. But I don't really understand what the variable was that allowed me to enter.

Any ideas?

Turn off AR. It makes the whole process easier.

Agree with @MtPollux ! While I regret missing some of the benefits of using AR, like moving around the room and getting closer looks, it’s seriously a pain and quite temperamental to use it on my phone.

according to james wright (a WU-tuber whose youtube channel is called Wizards News), having AR on allows one to peer around corners, go up over things and down below things inside the portkey room/space that you cannot do with AR off, so certain hidden wrackspurts are theoretically tappable only with AR on

he has attempted to put together a database of every wrackspurt location inside every different portkey room/space. he also is trying to track rewards, though he does not seem to differentiate between specific items of the same category — ie, he seemed to treat all ingredients the same (as far as his internal point system for valuing wrackspurt rewards), even though it would be particularly helpful to know the differences in location and frequency of getting the portkey exclusive items, ie unicorn hairs and powdered dragon claw and hermit crab shells

ultimately, his database is not yet big enough but he is trying to grow it

for most people, i suspect not having AR on is not too much of a disadvantage, if at all.

for what it is worth, inside the borgin and burkes location, there is a wooden post to the left of what looks like a refridgerator. james has reported that behind the post are up to 2 separate wrackspurts, supposedly reachable with AR on

i do not keep AR on, but when i tap up and down the height of that post, usually i get 1 wrackspurt hidden behind the post anyway, sometimes none at all, but so far not 2

@Crogabattoir also, in case you really do want to use AR, I found it easiest when the game could easily discern a room. A defined space with walls. If it couldn’t define the space, it wouldn’t show the box. So when I tried outside while Wizarding, it wouldn’t work. I had to try at home in living room (biggest walkable space). Obviously I don’t know what you’ve tried, so not sure if this is helpful, but thought I’d mention it.
