Was a passenger for most of the event and lost more than I found, including having to restart 8 times, usually after a frozen screen upon capturing a foundable. As with most freezes, lost the energy and the potions, did not get the credit for the capture. The erumpent horns were a nice find. Spell energy was rare in the rural areas we were driving through. The day was a wash especially since it was declared with so little advance notice. We had "real life" obligations planned long before, which, in all honesty, were worth more than the game.
I did the event with my iPhone. The free stuff in Diagon Alley was not available until the event started. I found energy on the ground and I got huge amounts of energy from inns. I found horns on the ground for the first time. I collected six of them. I got a lot of spinners and other things. At the end of the day I leveled up to level 33. It was a good day.
Whenever the game acts strangely I shut it down and restart it. Occasionally I restart my phone. This solves most problems I encounter.
I hope this helps people with iPhones seeing strangeness .
Follow up from community day.....I was a complete idiot! For some reason I subtracted time rather than adding and was way too early. Sorry.... What a derp!
"Also, the free store pack did not appear during the event" -- for everyone who had this problem, I had it once too, and I contacted them in game about it, and they awarded me the pack after! So I hope everyone can still get theirs!!

I downloaded the assets package first thing in the morning 9/21. Expected to see gift package after download like on dragon day.
I didn't see gift button on map until after event started and I didn't find the free gift just the 200 gold package.
Still need 5 pink umbrellas to finish silver page.
Found enough time turners and had fun playing.
Only time I had to restart the game for connectivity error caused me to lose Tom Riddle fragment.
