Restricted Spell Books
Will there ever be a way to get these outside of events? Beta players received 15 extra books. People that attended the Indianapolis event received 30 extra books. These two things have already led to a major imbalance, since with the current event every two weeks, that means that every other player will be a month behind, no matter what they do.
I am already seeing some of the players in my area only forming fortress groups with those that are certain level professions. That means that those that attended the event will always have a leg up on those that had to work, could not afford the trip, or already had plans, etc.
There should be a way through all players to achieve the same level, without having to go to the events, since it is not possible for everyone to go to them.

I’m sorry there are players being so shallow, but tbh, I wouldn’t want to play with them if that’s how immature they are. I’m not hurting for being at the same level as everyone else, and our group is always playing with someone who is “behind “ without bother. Find your group and you’ll be fine.
I never understood people going "harcore". We actually have two players that are complete newbies in my small group and they were so shy about it at first, but we were all excited to help them get into the bigger fortress levels!
I'm really sorry that people are being jerks like that. Since this game doesn't have that many players (not compared to ingress or pokego), I'd hope people would be nicer and would actually form friendly communities. Not something like this :/
But it's like @Dogoutlaw said... if they're like that, I wouldn't wanna play with them either. I really hope you can find a good group of people to play with. Very much rooting for you!❤️
Also, I totally get you, since I'm foreign, there was no way I could go to an event like that so short notice, so I felt the sting too... but I hope it's just the first of many and that we'll all get our chances, if anything.
It’ll be okay. It’s just a game. If none of us ever receive another restricted book, the sun will continue to rise and puppies will still be adorable.
Like @Dogoutlaw and @JulieJubz said, you don’t want any part of groups who only allow players of a certain level. Instead, feel sorry for those people who are so tragically unremarkable and void of personality that they must rely on such shallow things to set them apart.
Just have fun. Don’t worry about what anyone else has. Do your own thing. Now, go forth and be awesome!
I agree that theres something must be changed about RSB, but from a differrent perspective.
I started this game about 1 month late, so i miss fauna brillint event. That means i get atleast 15 less RSB than most of you. I dont find it...disturbing. the game's named Wizards Unite, so i belive there won't be any pvp here.
What i must say is about in the future. Will be there any new player in this game in next 6 months or a year ? While now theres already some players who have finished their lessons book. It must be like how i feel when a friend ask me to play pogo while he already play the game more than a year.
I dont mind doing some heavy ****, which we can do with scrolls and red books. But nothing we can do to grind RSB. So if youre a year late..... Youre doomed to be a noob...
How long is it to get approval?
Sorry if i've made a double posts. It's my first 'waiting approval' . Didnt catch that popup.
@SumaHan I really don’t think coming in late is a big deal. Everyone is in such a rush, but it’s a game. Enjoy the journey! I recently recruited a friend to play, he’s about 20 levels behind me. Back to Hogwarts is his first event, so he’s missing at least 45 RSB’s. We battle together when he’s able, no big deal. We have the experience to help him along and give advice. When we’re in the fortress, which we of course had to start at ruins I and go from there to bring him up, we prioritize foes he can fight for him only, and when foes are too tough, he charms and hexes as needed. I say the more players the better, so I don’t care if they’re behind. As long as they’re willing to play and be a part of the team, I’m happy!
At least you have a group to be excluded from. I am lacking players in my area.
This is just a game. It's a pretty positive game. There is no one player faction verses another like in Ingress. It is a work together game. People in rural areas have a hard time. But more players will eventually join.
I friended a PoGo player i met Pottering around one evening. She joined the game. I had high hopes and visions of fortress battles, but she quit after a day. Might have been the constant battling creatures and Wizards.
Hang in there, and maybe you will have a community event within driving distance and "catch up" to those other players.
Wow @Dogoutlaw , thats a wonderful group you have there. I am more a solo player, so i admit i failed to see from your angle. It's not i don't like join a group, but i dont have the time to do game in a separate game session. I must do my daily activities, so i do my game while doing them or in between.
But i am curious now, you already say your angle, then how about that noob's angle ? I mean can he stand being group's "burden"....forever....?
Less than 3 months we already have 5 event weeks, right? Thats 75 RSB. So in a year we would have about 300 RSB. Can a new player survive that ?
@BenTiger I play alone myself and I am having a blast. I don't have a group. When I play I walk among Pokemon Players in groups having fun and yeah I feel the loneliness. But I look down at my German Shepherd and smile and remember I'm not alone. 😉 Don't worry just focus on you.
I love HPWU and I would love to hang with a group but I'm okay alone as well. I am hoping to find more players in my area, but it hasn't happened yet. Patience is a virtue they say. However, I am glad this forum is here.
I like getting answer and chatting an expressing my thoughts with fellow players.
Don't let anyone make you feel uncomfortable just do you and enjoy the game.
@Dogoutlaw, @JulieJubz, @SumaHan, @Calondywyll Thank you all for your words of wisdom and your input. That is why I really appreciate this forum. 💕
We actually just got a newbie in my small group (which I guess now I can say it's medium sized, wow!) and e's nowhere near where most of the other players are. And he already came in telling us that, and we totally told him we will go slow with him and will do our best to help him out.
I hate that anyone would think of themselves as a burden. Plus if the group is big enough, since there's only a 5 player gap (I think) in the fortress, people who want to do a stronger level can always separate into one group and others can stay on the lower ones.
And honestly? absolutely no one misses out! One of the things I actually really like about the way the fortress is set up, is that even the lower levels give you something you want. I still need to get books. So I would gladly fight with lower level members :)
Oh and here's another thing about our dynamic. We only meet up once a week. That's it, we don't do lots of days. So I'm still for the most part, a solo player. And that works out fine, you know? I think that's a nice soothing way to go about it.
Also, there's the fact that each profession only has the one lesson plan so far, and there's no telling when additional lesson plans will be added. I suspect most players, even those who started after the first couple events, will be able to catch up. Players who gained any sort of advantage may be able to start building out a second profession sooner than you, but as soon as you have the stats maxed out on just one profession, you're pretty much on even playing ground with anyone else. It make take you a little longer to get there than it will for someone who attended the fan festival, but you won't miss out on anything important in the meantime.
This game, as well as the previous 2 Niantic games, are set up in such a way as to help lower level players. People who exclude those players aren't worth the time. I don't know why some people treat games like this as though it's an MMO where you need the top level and best gear to defeat the final raid boss. It isn't designed like that nor for that style. But it seems there's always going to be an exclusionary group out there.
@SaiDax awww, you just made my day. I'm so happy you get to play with your German Shepard ❤️
Ok so I understand the complaints here and I definitely sympathize. However, I’m not sure why there is an expectation that this game should be balanced or fair. If you started playing later than other people, it’s a given that you may miss out on certain things. Much like life, games are not always “fair.” I don’t see why people would think they can show up two months after release and be on the same playing field as others who have been playing since day one.
For instance, in my case, I started playing about 2 weeks after US launch. I missed the first “event” prior to the fauna and flora event for care of magical creatures Foundables. Buckbeak is actually the only Foundable I have never encountered in the wild that appears in map/trace interactions. Care of magical creatures is also my lowest rank in terms of family XP. But that being said, I don’t blame anyone else for the fact that I didn’t know the game existed until later on. That’s on me. It may be a missed opportunity, but it’s not like this was an exclusive event that I wasn’t allowed to be part of.
We all had the opportunity to participate in the game from launch day on and we didn’t, whether we were aware of it or not. I have a hard time with posts like this because I don’t understand why people feel that they need the playing field leveled to benefit them. It’s like showing up late to a general admission concert and expecting a front row seat. It’s not gonna happen. Just my two cents.
The restricted section books are consistently being rewarded during the bimonthly brilliant events and most people should have no issues progressing at this rate. The red spellbooks are a different story since there isn’t a cap on challenge XP and you only get 2 books for leveling. But that’s a post for another thread...
@Herm10neG92 very good and valid points.
I will say that having events like the Indianapolis one, the main thing I'm hoping for is that other countries (my own included) will get events like that too, so internationals also have the chance to attend. That's the only thing that I really do say is completely out of reach for a lot of people, and that I hope it doesn't stay that way.
But even if they do an event in Brazil, depending where, I might not even be able to go. So there's always that chance and I'd have to suck it up either way. 😅
First off all, those sound like a group of people I wouldn't want to join anyway.
Second, I find the biggest bottleneck are the red books. I'd worry more about those.
Lastly, it's a mobile game. I've seen it in Ingress, I've heard about it from PoGo... People are taking it too serious and forget to have fun.
@SumaHan I do have a good group. I've learned at this point to cut out the toxic people! As for the noob's perspective (the two I have personal knowledge of), I think the only hesitation is they feel like they don't know what to do, and that just takes experience, plain and simple. First was hubby, who joined about five weeks after I did (late July), and then a friend, who joined about 2-3 weeks ago. Hubby was hesitant at first, but he's caught on, and now he loves to do the fortress and wants to go higher and higher. He's going to run me out of runestones one of these days!! Our friend is still in the hesitant stage, but we tell him what to do, and all is well. Soon enough, he'll be the same as the rest of us. There is NO feeling of burden. I completely agree with what all the others have said as well. It's really a non-issue for most of us.
I really hope that you all are right, guys.
Without a steady stream of new players, a game will wither and die.....
I wish i have a group now.....
@Herm10neG92 There is a challenge cap. I don't like to think that high though or I start feeling sad.
The level cap is level 150 and requires 3,770 xp. All for 2 red books.
@WerewolfChaser Oh I didn’t mean a level cap. I assumed there was one in place for now. I just meant it keeps requiring more and more challenge XP for you to level up; it isn’t kept to 100 like family XP.
@WerewolfChaser Capping at a thousand would already be too much. But 3,770 is ridiculous.
So... it is about 5 minutes per 200 Challenge exp. That means 2400 Challenge exp per hour. At 150, it would take a little over 1.5 hours of non stop Fortress battles for 2 Skill Books. One skill can cost up to 30 Skill Books. That makes 22.5 hours for one skill.
That means it would take a days of non-stop Fortress battles for one skill... now factor in work, sleep, eating, etc, thus limiting you to maybe one hour average per day. That means 22 days for that skill. Even with that time, you will still be waiting on RSB, to complete your lesson, especially if you are a Professor.
@BenTiger I’m a professor, not beta player, didn’t attend any special events, here’s where I’m at. Let’s use your numbers for sake of argument. 3 hours for 1 challenge rank/2 spell books and 1 hour per day. Let’s also assume one event per month, although we’ve been getting more. I need the following to complete my lesson plan:
148 RSB = 10 months
203 spell books=306 hours(days)=10 months
That’s pretty even! If they continue to have two events per month, that would be five months to finish with RSB’s, and I’ll still be waiting on those darned spell books. Now consider the other two professions which require less RSB’s and a lot more spell books. They have it much worse. Why do you think you’ll be waiting on RSB’s?
Assuming the numbers in the previous posts are true, it will take months of active play to finish a skill tree. I don't see the problem with that. Like many games of this style, HPWU is designed to allow you to move quickly through the earlier levels and then take longer as your level gets higher. I know that since the game is new we're all still feeling the rush of having climbed quickly through the first 30 or so levels, but if that pace keeps up we'll all sprint to level 60 and max out our professions and then there won't be much left to do .
Another way of looking at it is that in Ingress and Pokemon Go, an active regular player can generally hit the top level in about a year (without using any tricks or shortcuts). Some will get there sooner, some may take much longer than a year. I think that's about what people should expect from HPWU.
The problem is that you are only looking at the first lesson. There will be over 400 skills, so at least three lessons per profession. That means 3 years to get the skills for one profession... and they try to advertise the game as if you can change professions at will.
This is in response to BenTiger's comment: While they do say that you can change professions at will, and you can, they also say, in detail, that any and all SB, SCROLLS, and RSB that are spent on your previous Profession will not be reimbursed.
As for the subject of an "even playing field"? Personally, I think it is the epitomy of laziness, and entitlement, to think that anyone that joins a game after it has been going for any amount of time deserves to have everything given to them. Those people that started playing on release day, and the rest of us who started afterwards, worked on our characters. We went out, hunted down traces and battled in theFortresses, and some of us are still hunting down those damned Doxies(Ye Gods, I despise those things!). And we still have new players that come in, ask questions, and PUT IN THE TIME AND ENERGY TO GET THEIR CHARACTER LEVELED UP! Not a one of the new players that I have helped has ever felt like a burden, or been made to feel that way. But, that is just how I feel about it, quit bitching about it, it isn't going to change. Play the game, have fun, and if you're lucky, make some friends along the way!
@MtPollux I forgot to mention that no one is going to be sprinting to level 60. Level 30 is only 5% of the way to level 60. There will likely be a few people getting 60 in a year, but the average player will take about two years. That is perfectly fine, though. It gives people something to work towards and the benefits of leveling are really marginal after 30, so it is not a huge rush.
@BenTiger "sprinting" may be a relative term, but I'm sure there is a handful of players who are trying to progress through the levels as quickly as possible. Because none of us has actually made it there yet, I was just using 1 year as an estimate to make the point that there's no rush, it's a long game. If it's actually more like 2 years to hit level 60 (and complete various lesson plans along the way), my point still stands.
