Speed is key. It's often better to do it fast than accurate. fast and accurate will get you masterfull from time to time. Some spells are easier to get masterfull than others. E.g. the M (Arresto Momentum) is quite hard.
I'm glad its not just me having trouble tracing a masterful 'M'.
But yeah, just to echo whats been said here, speed is more important than accuracy, though you will need both to get a masterful cast. To me,it looks like as soon as you start the cast, the indicator on the spell bar starts to degrade. Once the spell is traced, your accuracy will then factor in to either improve or worsen your speed result. Think of it as speed being your score on a test and accuracy being the extra credit stuff (but not optional).

Your gonna struggle early on to get masterfuls youll get better chances as you level up
Also, accuracy isn't all. Speed is also a factor. In my experience aiming for the middle ground between the two give the best results.
Speed, levelling up and the potions help for the more severe ones
Thanks! oh well, leveling up is kind of hard. I get to see rare ones but I seldom get 'em.
Stock up on Spell Energy, find a tower, drink Baruffio, hit Ruins 1 repeatedly

You can use the spell caster on the wizards unite site to practice casting and gauge speed and accuracy.
