I understand the frustration you feel, it's tough when you feel unable to complete the tasks.
Between the gift and the daily treasure we received 6 silver keys. This should have permitted most people to clear out portmanteaus (as has oft been self reported.) There was also a special that allowed you to be an additional set.
But in truth this goes back to the two part brilliant event. Most of us were preparing ourselves ahead of week 1 for a portkey based assignment. I know I didn't pick up any portmanteaus between week 1 and 2 so that I would have space to pick up brilliants. During week 2, the announcement was made about eggs and I stopped picking anything beyond my required brilliants.
It is possible, with bad luck, that you picked up 5s and 10s and not brilliants during week 2. Bad luck is part of any game with randomness, but in this case it can be overcome by walking more.
If we could delete portmanteaus then the randomness of what you get when you pick them up off the map would be negated. I wouldn't need to plan for the event, just react. In regular play I could just delete all the 2km and just work on the higher distance portmanteaus.
I like the work and strategy that goes into preparing for the events, and while I would be discouraged if I was in your shoes I would rather that than a game that is too simple and can always be overcome.
