Restricted Section Spell books & where to spend them
Solo playing Professor here.
I've max the Deterioration Hex and opened the path to the extra initial focus.
In the top half of the tree I've skipped those skills that gate bits with "if foe/wizard has more than 1..." so now I'm pretty much down to the bottom bit and I'm wondering where to spend books next
Either I max the defense charm or get the defense breach for werewolves or something else entirely
What do you think?

Exactly what you said. The proficiency charm is cool, but at 7 focus it's not enough bang for the buck for a solo player. The protection charm will help you last longer as you work through higher levels of the fortress, and of all the remaining 15 book skills the werewolf one will definitely be the most useful.
So in a tree where all nodes to each of those skills were unlocked you'd do:
Think I may just skip the proficiency charm and other nodes that are geared at teamplay.
After wolves & protection I might just start hoarding the Restricted Books for when new lesson plans drop
If you are playing solo you may want to revisit those skills you decided to skip. You may not be aware of this but you can cast your protection and proficiency charms on yourself which will allow you to take advantage of skills like 'Strength in Numbers' and 'Team Work Makes the Dream Work'. If you are working the bottom of the skill tree then I suspect your 'Tank' (Defence) is really well developed. Yet a Professor's Power caps out at 79. Adding an additional 17 to your Power by training those two skills will allow you to be a great deal more effective in the Fortress. Once you have trained them up, follow up with 'Team Teaching' and 'Restricted Section'. You can save 'Sparring Specifics' until you find yourself engaging battle chambers with a friend or two as it won't be effective solo. With these skills, you'll be soloing Dark Chambers before long.

I am aware and but we're taking about 10 focus for both of those charms to be applied (which means gaining another 6 focus on top of the initial one). That's a lot of potions or **** through foes.
I drink one strong invigoration, self-charm protection and then DetHex everyone (using the focus gained from every victory for the next DetHex)
Adding an additional 17 to your Power by training those two skills will allow you to be a great deal more effective in the Fortress.
However I hadn't considered the +17 power from it.
I need to reconsider this. Cause investing there would mean more power but also more need for focus whereas the protection charm makes me stronger at a cost I already pay and werewolf (which I encounter more often due to proficiency) 's defense breach would also translate to an increase in power (more situational but no potion drinking required)
With these skills, you'll be soloing Dark Chambers before long.
Atm (grade 10 professor, lvl29) I've gotten to floor 14 but on the tankier foes (acromantula, DEs & dark wizards) I tend to drink exstimulo potions to save time.
Professor here, as well. Most of the time, I play solo. Occasionally I'll team up with another player or two. I have several friends who are making slow progress but still chugging away, so I have hope they'll eventually reach the SOS assignment requiring 3 fortress challenges with a team of 3 or more people.
*Note: While the wording on the SOS assignment says "You and three other players" it really only takes a total of 3 players for everyone to get credit for that assignment. However, the assignment itself appears to be a bit buggy. Regardless of whether there's a total of 3, 4, or 5 people on your team, one or two players might get credit for a challenge while the others do not. You'll get through it, but just be prepared for the fact that it could take well above 3 challenges for everyone to get credit.
Okay, back to the point. Since team play happens for me occasionally, I've gone with a balanced approach by boosting my defense charm and proficiency charm equally. My other charms, mending and deterioration, are maxed out.
In the end, you'll complete everything. Honestly, based on watching other players, I haven't noticed that one path down the skill tree has a very remarkable difference in fortress challenges compared to another. However, if I had to recommend a best path forward, @ZookiTabooki has a solid strategy that I can't argue with.
This is my current status. I have not found a single player to team up with since the game started.😫
I live in Daventry UK.
@Ibrowse For the next brilliant event, I strongly suggest that you save your next 15 RSBs for the "confidence" skill. Not because it is especially great, but because behind it is "divining details", which allows you to increase your initial focus by 2. That will make your life much easier in fortress battles.
@Ibrowse - We (Prof / Magizoo) are in Castle Bromwich if you want to meet up, we can travel
Also solo professor. Game level 30 level 11 professor. I maxed defense, all the focus I could, precision, werewolf specialist, working on maximizing accuracy and critical power. I went after any thing I could get with just scrolls.
I have solo'ed up to dark forest 3 with level 5 ruin stone. Took almost all my healing, invigorations, and exstimulo, potions. Great XP but to potion expensive. Now I only do that if I'm very close to next level up.
I have a Fortress I can get into from lunch table at work. Now I start with BBE potion, spend 30 minutes in the tower level 1 thru 3 with high level rhinestone going for difficulty levels between 690 to 1050.
Not 1 shot defeats but easy to solo. Decent XP but high in challenge points. My goal is leveling up in challenge category to get red spell books. I choose the skill with lowest number of red books and max that skill. Spent red books today on 4 of 5 accuracy. I can usually get 2 books every day or 2. I find the player stats easier to understand. I find the one I want to max then find it's symbol in the tree. Because absent minded professor, I screen shot the skill I want towork on next.
I am mostly solo professor too. Releasing the additional focus has been very beneficial. Hard to decide if I should use it in shield or hex. What level professor are you? What is your stamina? Maybe look at Your Expertise and balance that out... What is highest level you can solo without using potions? I'm frustrated I can't get too high.
@Owlx nice progress on your skill tree. I would suggest working on those last 4 power upgrades before anything else. You'll really appreciate how much easier it is to win when you're doing 17 extra damage per hit.
@MtPollux. That was mid Sept. I've been increase power lately.
This is current tree. I have too many choices. I was going to wait until after end of dark force 2 until spending my lesson assets. But with Halloween focus on Fortresses I may spend every thing except green spell books.
@Magicalmom42 - Definately shield yourself as the shield lasts for the current session whereas the hex lasts for one opponent only. If I am in a high level tower I generally invigorate then Perfect, after which I shield myself, costs two potions (I start with 4 focus) and for good measure to rack up the spell count I heal myself even though I haven’t taken damage at that point
Next action depends upon whether playing solo and how difficult the session is. If playing alongside Magizoologist they need shielding too - massive problem if the Magizoologist gets killed as they have the healing / restoration capability so another invigoration potion may be needed
If playing solo and elites appear then hexing them is a good option too
@OriginalCaruso Solo professor here as well. I haven’t really used shield much at all. Usually use deterioration hex (quicker knock outs and saves spell energy). What do you mean shield lasts for current session? Meaning I can pop that on in the beginning of a wizarding challenge and it will be with me through all 3 or 4 foes? (You’re talking about “protection charm” right?) Can I ask why you like that one much better? So far I only have that at 2/8, but I’ve maxed my deterioration hex.
@MrSciGuy Solo professor also. My protection charm is similar to yours (3/8), my deterioration hex is also maxed.
I find the main benefit of using the protection charm (apart from the +20% defence) is the act it has as an enhancement.
With the ‘Confidence’ and ‘Strength in numbers’ lessons I also get +6 defence and +5 power in fortress battles.
The deterioration hex only lasts for the single foe that you place it on, the protection charm can be placed at the start of a fortress challenge and lasts for EVERY foe you face.
@Dewin99 Thats awesome. I did not realize that! So I can either pop a strong invigoration draught or take out a foe to get +3 focus (initial is 4 for me) and then use protection charm. Good to know, thanks!
@MrSciGuy We’re very similar I think. My initial focus is also +4.
For lower chambers I usually place the protection first then get additional focus after the first foe for deterioration hexes.
For higher chambers I use a strong invigoration potion and place both right from the start.
As others have mentioned on other posts, Baruffio & Trace tonics also work as enhancements too.
@Dewin99 @OriginalCaruso Does proficiency power charm also last for full fortress session, or is that per foe? Is that one worth it? Just trying to figure out where next to spend my green books.
Currently both protection charm and proficiency power charm for me are at 2/8. But I also still need the “hat” skills like +5 power with one enhancement, etc. The +30 defense breach vs werewolves is enticing...
@Dewin99 How do you place protection right away? Do you always use strong invigoration draught? Either that or take out a foe without charm and get +3 focus.
@MrSciGuy The proficiency charm is similar to the protection charm. It will last for the entire fortress challenge.
The +7 focus cost means I rarely ever use it though. Maybe when I get to the top Dark chambers I’ll need it. We’ll see.
The protection is only +3 so my initial +4 means I can use it straight away. You should be able to as well?
I’d 100% recommend ‘Strength in numbers’ before any other RSB lessons.
@Dewin99 My bad. I was mixing up the foxy requirement for those two. I’ll give the protection one a shot next battle and then add deterioration hex.
Any advice on where to best spend my green books next from my earlier comment?
@Dewin99 Sounds good thanks! As soon as I complete this event, that’s where I’m putting those green books. I have a few extra from before, so I’ll also try to boost protection charm.
No worries. All the very best of luck!
@MrSciGuy Out of curiosity, where are you at in relation to the Strategic Spells Cast?
@Dewin99 Ha! Only 1173/3000. I try to use mending charm a few times between each foe. “I think I can, I think I can...”
Btw, what’s your friend code? I’ll add you.

It’s well worth **** the Mending charm for the 15 spell books!
