I'm not sure if I understand the question, but I'll try to answer. In order for your witch/wizard avatar on the map to move, you must physically move. Walk around your neighborhood, a college campus, a park, or some other place of interest. Moving around will lead to encounters. You'll find ingredients to pick up, which you can then use to brew potions. You'll encounter Foundables to rescue, inns to fuel up on spell energy, greenhouses where you can grow/harvest more potion ingredients, and fortresses where you can engage in challenges against Foes. Here's a link to the getting started guide:
I think this post was actually meant to be sarcastic though haha. /s generally is used on reddit and implies sarcasm when it might not be obvious in text exchange over the interwebs.
I must admit to having tried to scooch my Avatar over to the closest inn. But she just stands there playing with her wand or turns and makes own noises

Ooooh, silly me. I follow a couple subs on reddit, but I'm not up to speed on all the slash remarks, lol.
in the beginning in ingress the most frequent question asked in open comm (in game chat) was 'how do i walk'
augmented reality gaming was a new thing being defined by ingress/niantic and the answers to that question ranged from helpful to...sarcastic.
this was actually addressed in wizards unite through the in-game help file.
(suitcase, settings, help/legal, get support, troubleshooting, how do i move)
*left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot*
I think I'm getting the hang of this!

LOL 😆 😆 😆 Thanks @Osprey1, I'm gonna have this stuck in my head now!
You can't walk. You must parkour.

I think I can handle that. 😉
HAHA that would be an interesting sight to see!
