Suggestion: GPS tracking while app is closed

I walk a lot while at work or going for lunch or when taking the dog for a walk, but none of that counts for this game since I am not gonna waste my data having the app open all the time. Please implement a feature similar to the Adventure Sync in Pokemon Go where it still tracks your distance travelled despite the app being closed.
Hell, I'd be happy if it even took the steps I've taken into account rather than pure distance (I can't always have my phone on me), so even if the app would sync to Google Fit that would be nice.
Cause let's be honest--I couldn't play Pokemon Go when it came out because I didn't have data access and to do anything in the game, you needed an internet connection. Now, this is a repeat of that mistake by Niantic. Despite having a small amount of data now, I have no interest in whipping out my phone all the time for HP:WU when Pokemon Go is just easier to enjoy because it recognizes the walking I have done (or most of it, anyway). I keep the screen off, walk to the pokestop/inn, play for a bit, then walk back. PGo tracks in this situation, while HP:WU doesn't. A bit of an oversight, don't you think?

The feature (called "Adventure Sync" by Pokemon GO players) is already confirmed as a feature to be released in an upcoming release.
