Wizarding challenges

Hi all, I am really struggling with the wizarding challenges. I have worked through quite a few of the lessons for my profession, I always use a level 1 runestone and I've tried using potions as well but nothing seems to work :-(
I think the main problem is that I can't work out how to cast offensive spells. I've read online that you have to drag and drop the green star shaped icons onto yours or your enemy's icon but when I do that nothing happens so then when I try going into battle I can only use the defensive spell so I either run out of time or the foe defeats me. Any suggestions?

The in game support is also very good for this aspect of the game and includes animations with the explanations.
