“Initiate” Community Day with a Potion

(Sorry if this is a double post, I posted, then edited it, and it disappeared and can’t be found anywhere)

One of my favorite parts of WU, is the fact that we can do battles at anytime of the day or night we don’t have to rely on a very short timer like in pogo with raids.

This got me thinking of community day which, in pogo is often inconvenient, either in date or time of day, etc.

Since the community day stuff seems to be about “buffs”, I was thinking, why not make a community day “potion” that we would get from Diagon Alley. So instead of it starting at a certain time, which, for me as an example: in America on the eastern coast, is 4-7pm which isn’t community “day” it’s community NIGHT... is super inconvenient on a Saturday/Sunday. And in winter the parks close before 7 and that can be an issue too.

Since WU is trying to make a better system and seem actually amenable to change, I was thinking we could take the potion that day when it’s convenient for us and a group of friends and do battles together when we are ready. The community day potion would affect the buffs like a brain elixir but specific to the CD bonuses. Should be code-able.

TL;DR - use a potion to initiate the CD bonuses, so we could play at a time that fits our schedule.

Please upvote/comment if you’d like to encourage this mechanism.

Thanks for listening!

The point of "community day" is to build "community".

I understand some people want to shift community day to a time that works for them. Certainly there are other people in your area that also would like a different time of community day.

No alternate start time for community day will receive a like from me unless it includes a mechanism that fulfills the intent of community day, bringing people together.

What could such a mechanic look like?

You go to the fortress inside the community day window. In a special chamber you cast lumos maxima. It sends a special beam of light up from the fortress and a starts 30 minutes timer. Each additional wizard casting lumos makes the beam brighter.

Community day starts when 5 wizards arrive or at the expiration of the 30 minute timer if at least three wizards total are present.

Casting lumos at a new fortress cancels your lumos at a previous fortress.

This is functionally equivalent to your system except that it specifically notifies and invites others to participate.

I think although “diluted” by a wider timespan people being out and more active throughout the entire day of a CD in general will still bring people together. But making the event during dinner hours 4-7pm, not many of my community can even come out for it.

In fact, members of the Jewish community won’t even be able to play because of laws regarding being home before sunset for them.

I’ve found that what community day often does, is create an imbalance between those who were able to play those constructive hours, and those that weren’t because of job/work/family/travel.

Niantic also doesn’t announce these events with enough planning time, so that’s a separate issue that compounds the issue.

Perhaps the actual DAY could happen at a certain time, but the additional bonuses could be made as a potion? So those that couldn’t make it out to the event itself could still take part in SOME of the benefits of the day? Like, higher spawn rates 4-7 of a family type, but Challenge XP bonus in raids could be a potion, so working people could meet other friends before or after hours to battle and still take advantage of the buffs? Would that satisfy your need for community to be at a designated time?

I still think it’s too late in the day, while California has theirs at 1pm, after lunch and before dinner, ours on the East Coast is right in the middle of dinner and rush hour and pushing times when the parks close their gates. Can’t have community meet up if the places the towers and inn’s are, aren’t accessible.

@Stone804 Where do you live? You stated you live on the East Coast, but the community is 2:00-5:00 for people in Eastern Standard Time (EST). It is afternoon and way before it gets dark. Also while some people may eat earlier, it shouldn’t fall during dinner for most families. I’m not refuting any of your other points, just that if you are on the East Coast I didn’t want you to miss the event by thinking it was the wrong hours.

I tend to think the shorter hours makes it easier for everyone to meet because it’s a more targeted time frame. However, I know all won’t be available during the same time on the same days.

i just wish it was 11 am to 2 pm local time, instead of 11am to 2pm pacific time (for america)

i am in central time, which means it is from 1pm to 4pm. last time it was absolutely brutal in the afternoon heat to try to do it. eastern time is 2pm to 5pm which is even worse.

the late morning schedule before the heat of the day really kicks up is so much better. 1-4 pm is the hottest part of the day and really rough.

pokemon events are usually that way - x to x local time. i wish they did potter event times like this too.

@Overflow4487 I have no idea how I got 1-4pm pacific time stuck in my head, unless I just confused the recent pogo CD that was 1-4 pacific so 4-7 eastern? This past CD for pogo was 4-7. So I am glad you pointed that out. Thank you.

The weird part is, someone else who I play with also thought it was that time. Which makes me wonder if the time changed or we both googled bad info, so strange.

I still, however, hold that I think it would stand out as a big benefit if wizards could have a potion mechanism to activate certain CD features that you could then control the 3 hour buff bonuses. Even if the higher rate of special Foundables have to be kept to a timeframe for server reasons.

@Stone804 The last two Pokemon Go commuity days were moved from the usual 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern - 2pm/5pm to 1pm Pacific/4pm Estern - 4pm/7pm for summer, because for people on the eastern side of the timezone spans, those hours would be a bit cooler. That shift was annouced widely enough that it may have been reported inaccurately as being for all Niantic events. This was also specified as a summer-only change, so we should expect the usual timeframe back sometime in autumn.

I expect the times are kept consistent across regions rather than connected to local time to prevent people near a time zone border from gaining an extra hour. One of the things players rarely think of when inspired by new feature ideas is that you need to run everything through a filter of "How could someone playing in bad faith break the game using this feature?" (That's a reflex you only get after being burned a few times.)
