I also like the idea of a familiar, especially given the bond that Wizards tend to have with them. As for what a familiar should be able to do, that I'm undecided about. So let's think about what would work (without messing with the games economy too much)
As long as your familiar is with you, you get 1 Energy for every 100m you walk (the amount of energy and the amount of distance is just a suggestion, feel free to argue/debate)
When your familiar is with you, you can send it off to "collect" ingredients for your potions - which would then "deactivate" the "energy/distance"-option
When your familiar is with you, you can send it to friends to deliver things to them (like potions or letters) - which would also "deactivate" the "energy/distance"-option until the familiar returns. Obviously, the familiar needs a certain amount of time to get to a specific friend depending on how far away they currently are. You're in Europe and your friend is in Australia? That'll require 24h for the delivery AND 24h for your familiar to return.
As long as your familiar is with you, your inventory is slightly increased when it comes to potions, ingredients, seeds
Then there would also be differnt types of familiars, some travel faster but can't carry as much, others can carry more but are slower, some might be completely unable to transport/carry things for you but might provide stat-bonuses in Fortreses (like +Power or +Defence)? To counterbalance switching your familiar depending on situation, you'd get bonusses for getting familiar with your familar (pun intended) - and switching it would completely reset the bonuses to zero (for your old AND new familiar)

Somehow we would need to tie familiars to foundable families so they could earn you family XP when you walked.
Yes! This would be awesome. And maybe instead of candies the familiars will award small bonuses depending on the type of familiar.
Maybe stuff like bonus energy from inns/greenhouses or bonus family/challenge xp from traces/challenges, bonus on kms walked, etc.
I'll be your familiar, @H4rdC4ndy
Just feed me daily and we're good.

I've put a bit more thought into it. Feel free do contribute:
